just wondering if u can get a cut grade on melee diamonds as small as 1 pointers? i was told that the melee diamonds have no cut grade but are F/G color and VS1 clarity. i just want my melee diamonds to be shiny and sparkly but does it make no difference on diamonds that small? thanks and happy sunday!

I heard that since they are that tiny having melee with super ideal cut grade can be costly. Will this be in a ring?

yes im getting a cushion shape halo for my RB and will have 1 pointers for the melee. so you are saying you can get a ideal cut for melee as small as 1 pointers?

yes. I've seen WF melee and the arrows are visible. But those tiny stones are usually graded as a packet, not individually.

what if the vendor tells me there is no cut grade? all i know is its total .35ct in melee and F/G color VS1 clarity.

Proper grading takes time, and time is money. Realistically it costs about $50 PER STONE to do a full grading. Obviously, for a $10-$15 stone, this makes no sense at all.

I'll second that.

I'll double second that!

Neil is a fountain of knowledge.

Personally, trying to cut grade a one pointer would make my head spin. :loopy:

yep. they aren't worth the time to do a careful examination for the cut grading.

I have never seen a one pointer-set or unset. How can something that small be cut? Any images to educate a novice?

I read somewhere on here that vendors buy melee of different qualities, and the quality is graded en masse. Like, there is generic commercial and excellent commercial grades (or some other labels) and you buy a parcel from those broad categories.

Some companies claim to have H&A melee and perhaps they have their own suppliers for those goods.

But none of them have a formal "cut grade" per se. ETA: even the vendors like WF or others who sell H&A melee do not have independent lab verificatin of cut quality. The label "H&A" is not given by a lab anyways, so really, it had little utility to consumers unless we have hearts images (in the case of larger branded stones) to verify the claim. When it comes to melee, the stones might have H&A, but functionally I take the label to simply mean "very very well cut melee" :))

So when you jeweler says there is no cut grade for melee, he is telling the truth. What he is washing over is the fact that there are different qualities of melee out there. F/VS is likely the high quality goods.

When it comes to melee you pretty much have to trust your vendor to source good looking stones.
The melee market is a mess with conflicting grades and terms.
One firms commercial line may be better than anothers premium line, some have a wider range in size or color or clarity or cut or all of the above or any combo than others in each lot.

You can cut grade them with an idealscope/aset but in general its not worth paying for it.

There are vendors who have lines of custom cut melee that sell for a large premium for example WF H&A melee.

wow thanks everybody! well since i got everything at GOG, im hoping they choose good quality melee then. i just want this ring to be perfect
