Is there a really big difference in a 0.9 caret and a 1 caret diamond? I know my boyfriend is going to propose soon (guilty of going snooping) and he has been given the choice of 0.9 with colour D and vvs2, whatever that means or going for a 1 caret but not as good quality. I've been trying to find images to show the difference. Personally I'll be glad of any ring but just curious

Stop snooping!

Sizewise not really. Side by side you'd noticed assuming both were cut equally. But quality is defined by more than just color and clarity. Cut quality should trump both, because without that, even a lesser cut D FL won't be as beautiful as a well cut H VS.

It depends on the diamonds. A 0.9 can look so close to a 1.0. Go for cut above all else. At the 1.0 [the magic #] the prices go up.
A little under a carat is a wise choice.

For reference, this is a 0.70 excellent cut -> p1070802.jpg
and here is a 0.60 excellent cut ->p1070715.jpg

I just got a 0.9ct for my fiancee and I used this website to help see what differences there might be between diamond sizes:

Size wise it should be hardly noticeable to tell a difference. If all things are equal, then a 0.9ct will cost less, so with the savings maybe you two can go on a trip or put it towards a downpayment for a home, or save it for something else.

D color and VVS2 clarity will also cost extra, so you could save some more if you're willing to be flexible on those.

But like the previous poster said, cut quality is the most important. Better to have a 0.9ct that really shines vs 1.0ct that isn't as well cut.

I would tell your FI that you'd prefer a GH VS2 diamond that is larger over one that is higher color and clarity and smaller. He's wasting money on color and clarity.

I probably wouldn't tell him that, but I completely agree. :naughty:
