@JewelledEscalators How did you find out? Thanks for sharing. I believe it is more widespread because not everyone gets their stones tested or checked.

Ha, well in my case I found out because that's what it said on the WGI gem lab cert that was included with the ring :lol:

Probably an honest mistake by the auction house (at least I'd like to think so) as it's not that common to find rubies that are oil filled. I actually thought maybe the gem lab made a mistake and since it only mentioned that it was unheated and fracture filled but not what the material was, so I contacted them and they told me their records showed it was oiled.

Still, a lovely ring (both the design and the gemstone) and I do miss it - it was relisted but went for more than I was willing to pay for it.

I think perhaps it's more common with spinels.
