Hi all, quick question...how do you feel about color? If you were wanting ~ 1ct stone and you could have a 1ct G color or a .85ct D color for about the same price, which would you prefer? Is it worth the decreased ct weight for a D or would you go for the 1ct and get the G since G is a very nice color as well. This is in context for a rb and both are exceptional cuts. Thanks!
 
I'd pick the 1ct G. The color difference at either of those sizes won't be significant, in my opinion. I'd rather have the larger diameter diamond. I have an H 1ct, and even that's plenty white face up or mounted. If you flip it face down unmounted, H might look rather alarming.

eta: I have a 7.2mm F color RB, and the H is about 6.4mm. If I put those two mounted stones side by side, the H is like 92 brightness paper next to a 96 brightness. I'd call both of them white, and either is acceptable. If the wearer really wants a bright white, you could drop to E or even F, I believe. I had a 1.19ct G, and it was hard to tell it from colorless czs if I mixed them up. D diamond would be like a colorless cz color.

Have you compared a well cut D and G? I have a G and I think it''s pretty white. But you need to decide what''s more impotant to you, a colorless diamond, or the 1ct mark.
 
I''d take the G, BUT I''d go a step further and take an even larger I/J. It''s your opinion that counts - can you go look at some GIA/AGS-graded stones in person?
 
I''d get the G, and look at some I-K first to see if you like lower colors...
 
i would go with a G and get a bigger stone. Personally, I wouldn''t go any lower than G.
 
Thanks everyone. I will look at a lower color for increased size and see what happens. I do think cut is king. I went to a local B&M jeweler and saw a J colored stone which was not a h&a type cut and they wanted close to 8k for 1 ct (???). I was so shocked I hardly was able to look at the stone! Thank you all for your comments! I love PS!
 
i can live with a G color.

I would compare them side by side and see which one you like. Once mounted you probably wouldn''t be able to tell much difference.

Ditto. Most well cut I''s and even many well cut J''s face up totally white. Plus I like a little color in them personally. I think it gives them character and a warm glow.

But between a D or a larger G. G... all the way.
 
Another vote for G.
 
There is a noticable difference in color between a D and a G to me. I personally prefer the ever so slight hint of warmth is a G color diamond compared to a D. On its own, though, a G looks totally white and totally colorless. It is only in comparison to a D that you would even notice the "warmth", if you can even call it that.

I would actually get a larger H color personally

G is still very white. I would go with the bigger one!
 
G and bigger! I have an F with side stones that are G/H- I can''t tell the difference and my G side stones on my wedding band next to me F stones look the same to me.

I don''t much value D colour, I prefer a slight warmth and personality. Even without the size difference, I''d pick the G. It''s totally personal preference though. Plenty folks here love D and E colours and would pick that over size any day.

I can''t really see much colour in my G- H colour stomes, unless I put them right next to another whiter stone. If it isn''t going to be set with D sidestones, I don''t think there would be a problem.
 
My preference would be the G. I have a G color in my ering and it faces up very white.

I think there would be a minimal difference in size, unless the .85 is right next to a l carat. I have .90/91 ear studs and they look like a carat (6.3 mm as opposed to 6.5).

But some really care about even a minimal difference in size. some girls just like to say they have ''a carat'' whether you can see the size difference or not.

G is considered to be very white and if you buy in B & M''s is often the whitest that is sold. Most people would be very happy with that. However, if you want something extraordinary, you might like to go with the higher colors. I have an F and it looks quite different from the G''s and H''s I have seen--it really does look like ice. and again, there are girls who like to think that they have a "D" colored diamond and don''t mind going smaller for that.

If its for you, you need to look and both and decide which you like and if its for someone else, you should sound her (or her friends and close relatives) out to see what goes with her particular personality. We can just tell you what''s important to US, but we''re strangers to you and you may not have the same taste. Neither one sounds like a loser, as a diamond.
 
I would be ok with a G. Plenty white/colorless for me.
 
There are some .95-.99ct E-F, SI1 diamonds which cost on the low end of what a 1.00ct G-SI1 round costs. This way you''d get pretty much the 1 carat look and have the assurance of the higher color, too.

I guessed at the the SI1 clarity since you didn''t mention it. I don''t think it will be a lot different at VS2.

I am looking to make an anniversary ring and I hear people speak of color frequently and being new to the whole diamond-buying experience I was just wanting various opinions. My er diamond is a family heirloom and I have no idea of the specs. For my anniversary ring I would like to use a face-up white diamond, I am not caught up on the degree of whiteness but by looking at different figures wondering if the increased $ was worth it in your opinion. Thanks again:)

In that case, Definitely the G. The G will have plenty of face-up white goodness. Of course, you should take a look at some D''s and G''s, and even lower colors in person. Take a quick look at them side-by-side but really, you should assess the G on its own and determine whether it looks white enough for you (My guess is you''ll barely notice a difference, if any at all).

By the way, diamonds are color graded on their side - so while they may look about the same face-up (another good argument for going with the G), there may be the slightest of slight tints from the side - so check that, if that matters to you at all. A well-cut G and D should look about the same face-up.

For me, I''d go for the bigger one... also, round brilliant D''s make me think of CZ''s. I think that''s my mind''s way of preventing me from falling for any D''s. (It''s weird but it works.) ;)
 
DEFINITELY the "G" !!! an ideal cut G!
 
I think the answer depends on what you want to use the diamond for. If it''s a pendant, I would go for G or even H because you''ll likely see it face up only and both G & H would look quite white face up (assuming EX cut). I just bought a H stone for a pendant and I''m very happy with my purchase because it looks quite white face up (I can see the warmth from the side, but no one can really see the side though.

Having said that, if you are going to use it for a ring and you can see the side of the stone, I would go for a better color stone, maybe not a D, but an F (still colorless) so that I can get a bigger stone. I''m quite color sensitive myself and I can see the difference between an F and a G/H, particularly from the side, and I prefer the colorless stones for either rings/stud earrings.

In that case, take a look a H, too. It might be white enough, especially if it''s one that''s nearly G.
 
My opinion about color is that it shouldn''t matter... just like other types of stones, diamonds come in a variety of colors and all of them are beautiful. I don''t think a D is required, especially in this day and age. I think the sooner we get over the "D" myth, the more we can enjoy D and M diamonds EQUALLY. Hey, you asked my opinion lol By all means if you want to pay the higher premium for the D diamond - go for it. I might consider it if a truly colorless look was what I was seeking, but it is unlikely I would want such a void of color. I find stones that have at least some color have a richness and presence that colorless stones do not. I don''t think the question is really what would I do or what can you get away with - but what is it that you really want? Do you really want that colorless D? Or do you not really care? Answer that and you have your answer.
 
g is pretty darn white to me. I would choose the bigger stone.
