Hi all,

I picked up my fiance's ring from the store where it was set on Saturday, and I just looked at the white gold setting and there are parts of it that seem to have some rough/yellowish parts already. What the heck? This is a Sholdt white gold setting, not some cheapo, and it's already got flaws? What should I do? I'm a bit upset over this, as I'm not sure if it's a defect by Sholdt, a mishandling by the person who set it, or what...

Here's the thread in SMTR (cannot see the yellowing, but just to check out the ring): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/its-done.80022/

EDIT: I tried buffing it a bit with a very soft cloth that I use to clean my camera lenses with, but it didn't work.

HELP!

It sounds like it just needs to be replated. I have had rings look sort of blotchy before and replating took care of it...kinda like the rhodium didn't completely adhere so to speak.

ETA: I just looked at your pictures again...the second picture, inside of ring...is that what you mean?

Yes, sometimes in setting or resizing they might mess up the rhodium plating. Take it back and ask them to replate it.

If that''s the case, then do I have a case for a discount, or some sort of compensation? I mean, I just ordered the ring through a well known B&M store, who then custom ordered (for size) from Sholdt. This was about 2 weeks ago, and the ring came tarnished (or became tarnished 2 days after it came). Is this normal? The LAST thing I want to do is send it back for re-plating after waiting 2 weeks for it to be finished...

If the jeweler does it voids the warranty? I'd talk to the jeweler, you haven't proposed yet right? I know you just posted this beautiful ring. I would think Sholdt would do the replating at their cost and rush it for you. Best of luck.

Ugh! Thanks...

Do you think they can re-plate it in store?

No, haven''t proposed yet...

This would be a lot easier if I didn''t live with my fiance, and the jewelry store wasn''t a 20 minute drive away. It becomes hard to come up with new reasons why I need to leave the house. PLUS, they''re only open past 6pm 2 days per week, and we don''t get home until 6. BAH!

They can just check to see if it voids the warranty. It takes very little time to do this.

Ah, OK. Hopefully not...

I kind of want them to reset the stone anyway, as it''s not 100% perfect. But that they can do in-house...

Resetting the stone might void the warranty, so you may want to be sure of that. As Kaleigh said, replating is a very simple process that will not take very much time at all. I am sure it has nothing to do with the quality of the setting...there are just some rhodium jobs that are better than others for whatever reason

i doubt replating the stone would void the warranty. take it back to the jeweler, see what they say. since they are the dealer, if it is a finish issue, they should cover the cost of the re-dip since it shouldn''t have been given to you like that in the first place.

Hmm... well I thought Sholdt would have used the best stuff around, and even if they didn''t, why would it already be yellowing less than 3 weeks after being plated?

I will call them tomorrow morning for sure.

It''s still an inconvenience to me, don''t you think? And the stone wasn''t set perfectly, either - do I have a right to voice my complaint? Should I expect some form of compensation for my troubles?

definitely voice your complaint. i'm not sure what compensation you can really get but they should offer to send it back to sholdt, have it fixed and returned to you at know additional charge. since you are planning to propose and may be under a time constraint they should overnight everything and get it taken care of asap. some other type of compensation would be a very nice but again, not sure you can really expect anything. they should make the ring right though, that's for sure.

Let us know what they say tomorrow. Remember it's easy to fix. Now about the stone needing to be re set? I'd take care with that. Of course you have a right to voice your complaints. I would hope all this would be fixed at no cost to YOU.

Thanks, I will let you all know how it goes.

Oh I hope they compensate you somehow, what an inconvience!

Unfortunately with WG- this yellowing happens. I had to have the channel diamonds tightened on my eng. ring and during this process I think some parts of the ring turned yellow so I had to have it re-plated w/ rhodium. re-plating takes 20 mins and cost usually $20- 40 depending on location.

Best of luck.

sounds like the ring wasn''t cleaned well enough before it was plated or the solution was contaminated.
Both should have been caught in a QC check.
