hi everybody. I saw a yellow sapphire ring, approx. 1ct at my jeweler''s today. oval cut, east-west halo setting, with some pave around the halo,18k WG. but the lovely vivid sapphire has a few very thin long white inclusions (feathers) in the middle. My hubby couldn''t see them with naked eye but they''re there. I know sapphires are hard but would this cause a problem? one more thing, are yellow sapphires rare and is 650$ a good price( they went down from 950$)
thank you

Feathers in themselves are not bad if....

1) they do not reach the surface of the stone...because if they do there is a chance they they can comprimise the stone (e.g. if the stone were to fall to a hard surface and the surface with the feather hit in the right way, the stone could crack).

2) they do not distract from the overall beauty of the stone...this is subjective, but in my mind this mean that the stone is eyeclean and the feathers do not comprimse the color/light return

Hope this helps.

Are they unheated sapphires? Probably safest to assume they are heated, which will make them cost less than unheated sapphires. For heated yellow sapphire you may pay around $500-$800 per carat for a TOP quality cut by a master cutter (this was a quote I received), or $200 per carat for a more regular native cut (e.g., http://www.thegemtrader.com/July%202005%20Yellow%20Sapphire%20Page.htm).

LtlFirecracker, yes very helpful. thank you
dreamer dachsie, thank you for all the info.

If you can see the feather, or THINK you can see it I say pass on this ring. I just got rid of a 1.5 carat RB I1 diamond because I could occasional (if it was turned the right way in the right light) see a flaw. It drove me nuts.

But if the sapphire is eye clean, the diamonds are eye clean then it appears to be quite a deal for a natural sapphire ring. I would be interested in it if it was me.

Thanks, Lisa. It''s weird you know, I could see the flaws as soon as I saw it but mom was with me and she thought they were a part of the stone, and she liked them. when I went back with my hubby he could not see them at all. eyeclean to him but not to me.

just a couple of minutes ago I learned that what I called feathers were actually ' SILK ' found in untreated sapphires. I was not comfortable calling them feathers nor could I call them pin points.
