Hello all,

I need help with choosing a yellow oval diamond for an engagement ring.
I was previously looking for a yellow oval sapphire to set in a halo for an engagement ring but after posting up in the coloured stones section of this forum for some advice, I was convinced that a diamond > sapphire =D
So I've upped my budget and did a bit of educating myself on diamonds through a diamond dealer and reading up here.
My budget is about 5000 for the diamond
diamond- oval, pale yellow. ideally a fancy light yellow but I'm open to the light yellows and the fancy yellows.

I came across these
One thing I can fault on both is the thick girdle.

What do you think?

OK- the first diamond you linked is a U/V color and will not look like a "yellow" diamond- more like a warm yellowish diamond- so if you want a true yellow diamond, I probably would not buy this one. The second diamond is what I would call an icy color yellow- not a warm yellow- so if that lemony color is one you like it is an option. The third diamond you linked (first James Allen) has a huge bowtie- I would not coonsider this one at all. The fourth diamond is cut very deep- so you are losing some face up value. Actually my favorite and still in your price catagory is this fancy yellow. I love the warm yellow, the shape of the oval- basically everything about this one. =)

Yellows and Oval shapes are limited at the moment on DBL but would this one appeal? If not, you could always call and see what David (RockDiamond on PS) may be able to find for you...

I second this. Recently purchased a radiant y-z yellow diamond from David. Excellent to deal with and very helpful, would reccomend getting in touch with him.

Thanks Pink Jewel and Enerchi for your replies. Just a few things.

Pink Jewel, can you tell me a bit more about the colour difference between warm yellow vs icy yellow in a diamond? Also, would you mind putting up the link to the diamond you posted?

Enerchi, I had a look at the diamond you suggested. The specs look good except the fluorescence which is medium blue. My understanding was that none or light fluorescence is desired, or do you have a different opinion?

I'm still on the hunt, so please do let me know of any more yellow oval diamonds you come across! Cheers.

Hey nnnguy! I love fluorescence in ANY diamond!! I have a few colourless diamonds with it and I love the glowing effect! In the case of my stones, it has ZERO effect at all under normal lighting conditions nor are they at all adversely affected under sunlight (no milkiness or haziness at all) however, when it comes to coloured stones, I know ZIP, NADA, ZILCH!! Whenever I have a question, I just fire off an email to David with a (probably stupid!!) query and he always emails me back right away with a very calm, logical, well explained answer... and I go on my merry way! If you are looking for a yellow diamond, I'd have him explain medium blue fluoro to you and how it affects yellow diamonds - if at all.

I have been visiting in the office at DBL in NYC, when diamond merchants have come in, so I know there is a steady stream of new treasures arriving and being added on a regular basis! So if there is something you know you specifically want in a certain price range, he could always be on the look out for you. But as to the fluorescence effect, someone w eyes on the diamond would best be able to answer that question, of how it would affect any specific stone.

Good luck!

Sorry- I don't how to link
but the diamond is number 42894, so you can put the number in their search engine. As far as explaining the colors, that is just personal preference. Some yellows will be more lemon yellow-which to me is a "cooler" or what I termed icy shade. Some yellow diamonds are warmer toned- think banana or custard. I personally prefer warmer tones, but you may like lemony colors-you have to decide what you prefer. As far as fluorescence in a yellow diamond, it may affect the color- then again, it may not. I would ask David if it affects that particular diamond which, by the way, I really like. I didn't suggest it as I thought it was smaller than you were looking for, but David is a VERY good resource for yellow diamonds, and many times, he has more than what he has listed on his website, so you should definitely give him a call. I have a lovely light yellow diamond I purchased from him. =)
