New rock: Yellow grossular garnet, 1.18 cts, Tanzania
Yellow grossulars also are found in Sri Lanka, and rarely from Quebec, but they often have poor clarity and a brownish-yellow color. The grossulars from Tanzania have a pure color, awesome clarity, and when cut well, resemble yellow diamonds in brilliance. It is absurd that they sell for less than yellow diamonds, since they are much more rare. When I showed GIA my best yellow grossular, about 20 years ago, they had never seen one. They published the picture of my yellow garnet in Gems & Gemology that year.
I tried to photograph it on a black background, and the gem is so brilliant, that the camera can''t record that dynamic range. So I had to take it outside today in heavy overcast (very flat lighting), and place it on white, to keep the brightness low enough that the camera can record it.
