Yellow gold diamond ring opinion

My gf’s metal jewelry is all yellow gold. Besides yellow gold looking great on her skin tone, I want to keep it consistent, so I'm heavily leaning toward yellow gold for engagement ring metal. That said, I simply don’t love YG diamond rings (I’ve gone through the a number of SMTB threads). I love YG with colored stones (red, green), but not with white diamonds-it’s just okay.

I'm looking for:

1) Women’s honest opinions of yg diamond rings? If you hate it, I'd love it hear it.
2) Whether it’s faux pas to have yellow jewelry but white engagement/wedding bands. I personally would think this is a no-no and would necessitate me buying a yellow-gold ering (e.g. for guys, belt buckle metal should match the metal of cufflinks and watch).

I only wear yg because it looks great with my skin tone. Even the prongs on my diamonds are yg. ( oh yes, I am also allergic to nickel so all white gold is out). I get compliments all the time on my rings. Fashion magazines are showing lots of yg for the fall. Why not compromise and get a two tone setting?

I used to wear only yellow gold everything until four years ago when I tried on a platinum setting. I immediately fell in love with the platinum color and the metal. I now will only wear platinum and actually got rid of all my yellow gold jewelry - something I thought I'd never do!

Hello! :wavey:

Some people will only wear white metals, some people will only wear yellow gold metals, some people mix and match, and some people wear whatever is in style. I would make sure that she LOVES yellow gold and is confident that she will for a long time, and get her a ring in yellow gold, regardless of your opinions about it. She will be the one staring at it and wearing it all of the time. I would try to get her opinion somehow though, because who knows, maybe she loves yellow gold but actually wants her engagement ring to be something else. If you do think she would want YG, there are many people here who can help you search for a ring that she will love and is pleasing to you as well. Please keep us posted!

I'm in love love LOVE with yellow gold. 18k yellow.

I know lots of woman who like all one color metal in their jewelry, but some don't mind mixing.

I would say though seems safer if she has all yellow gold to go yellow gold too

For some reason I dont like yellow gold e-rings with lots of pave however, I don't seem to mind
solitaires or 3 stones in yellow gold.

Something about the white of the pave stones breaking up the lines of the gold just
looks to busy for my taste.

So what kind of setting are you looking for?

Edit - like Neil pointed out some people do mix metals. I am one of them. My watch is two tone
Metal and a bracket that I never take off is yellow and white gold, so if I want to wear a
yellow gold RHR, necklace and earrings with my platinum wedding set...I do.

I love yellow gold, but I wanted platinum for my engagement ring. You'll probably get a lot of opinions from people here, but the only one that really matters is hers! I understand why some couples like surprises, but maybe you could have a friend or family member try to find out what she would like, just to be safe.

I LOVE yellow gold. If 18k rose gold didn't completely steal my heart, I'd probably have chosen a YG ring.

I don't think it's gonna be possible to ever 'match' all of your jewelry. You're bound to eventually wear jewelry with different tones of metal. But I see where you're coming from with the belt buckle/watch business. For women though, it's a bit more forgiving.

IMO, I'd go for yellow gold or unplated white. Good luck! :))

I'm about 85% sure to go with this exact setting with these exact proportions.

How do the proportions look for you? I think it's about right, but I wanted to get your opinions. Unfortunately, the center stone can't get any bigger :P .

I mix gold colors all the time. Right now I'm wearing wg Ering, with wg diamond and pink sapphire band and wg wedding band on my left hand , with platinum double diamond ring on right hand ( my avatar) and a yellow gold with rubies ring on my middle finger. Not to mention rose gold bezel diamond earrings and my rosé gold barbara pendant. It's what I felt like wearing. My dress today was red/ pink colors so the pink sapphires and rubies went well.
I mix bracelets too, but didn't wear any today!

What matters more is what the person who is wearing it wants/ likes.
I'd she always wears YG then I say YG.

Edited to add.... Love your choice very pretty ring!!

I don't think it matters what we think...the only opinion that matters is your girlfriend's! Since she only wears yg, I assume that's the metal she prefers so that's what I think you should get. I love the ring you posted!

I have yellow gold jewelry and while I've thought about changing metals, I never did. There is something really eye catching about white diamonds and yellow gold and yellow gold is basically maintenance free.

If she likes yellow gold and apparently she does, I wouldn't hesitate to go with it. I think there were 70's and 80's jewelry styles that are now considered taboo - lots of gold and pave and prongs. Way too much and overdone but white diamonds and a yellow gold shanked ring are still very classic and classy IMO.

I think it does matter what you all think as you have much more experience with jewelry than I. Of course I'm keeping my gf's preferences at the forefront of my mind in this process, but I don't want that to exclude me from asking more seasoned people. If I were buying someone a car, I'd most strongly consider what they are generally looking for, but I'd also ask people who know a lot more about cars than I. In this case, my gf hasn't expressed many strong opinions or preferences when asked, so I'm trying to do the legwork with the help of experts.

Do the proportions of side stone to center stone seem about right for that size center diamond?

I think the ring looks beautiful and I'm sure she will love it. You've obviously put a lot of time and thought into this and that counts for so much more than diamonds and gold!

My apologies if I missed it but what is the center stone you were looking at?

Here's a helpful chart. 70%-75% are my favorite. So
