Recently returned from a cruise. The ship jewelry store was pushing overpriced "rare yellow emeralds," which of course were just "golden beryl." I read with some amusement a recent report of a trademark decision:
http://thettablog.blogspot.com/2011/08/wyha-yellow-emerald-merely-descriptive.html
Question is: if you are smart enough to make enough money to take a cruise, why would you waste it on this stuff?

Easy. People believe what they're told. It doesn't matter how much money they have to spend. The word gullible applies whether you're poor or rich! :nono:

When it comes to gemstones, most people put down a lot of money for something they don't understand anything about. My ering, bought before PS, is not something I would buy now.

Most people are very trusting. They trust that the cruise companies will not allow scammers to rip customers off. Secondly, how many regular folks know anything beyond diamonds? Even most that do, end up buying crappy stones or overpay.

I also think that cruise ships take advantage of the great desire for souvenirs for the trip.

...and they trust they'll have working plumbing and a running cruise ship, not get stuck on a cruise ship "out on bail" which will leave them stranded and floating for days. :blackeye: Sorry, couldn't resist.

PT Barnum made millions off knowing there's a sucker born every minute. :|

This is a new one on me, but not suprising since you can already get morganite and aquas sold as pink and blue emerald...

Anyone remember "green amethyst"? :nono:

Is that what they were calling Prasiolite for a while?

I do, but there are lots of people out there that only know the names of the basic stones, ie birthstones. Prasiolite? What? Amethyst? Oh, yeah, that's usually purple, right? It comes in green, too? Cool!
