She's a Senegal Parrot, very tame and sweet.
She likes to lie on her back and play with a Q-Tip.
How cute is THAT?

Aw, that's SO cute - both of their expressions are adorable!! I love your dogs Kenny. I just depressed myself (and probably everyone else) by writing about my dog in the other thread, and this pic cheered me up.

I would say she's thinking: "Seriously, that thing better not get close to me!"

EXACTLY!

Kizzy (on the left) and Puppy, the bird, are cool.
They have worked it out and no longer fear each other.

Yaya is still scared and the bird knows it and likes to taunt and tease the poor dog.
It's like the dog's fear creates aggression in the bird.

When Yaya is sleeping Puppy will tiptoe up and nip her paw.
Yaya will yell, and Puppy will laugh.
Nobody's got hurt yet and it's funny as Hell.
Yaya's facial expression says it all.

I finally got a pic of her playing on her back.
She is a little clown and she's obsessed with Q-Tips.
It is essential that she pick every last cotton fibre from the stick.

It's true....a picture DOES speak 1000 words (and I think we'd prefer not to hear 999 of them based on the look on his face!)!!

Yes the bird's name is Puppy.
My SO hated birds, but loves dogs.
I figured if I named her Puppy it would be a nice passive-aggresive, subliminal, manipulative way to get the two together.
It took a long time, but it worked.

My SO would not get within 3 feet of the bird for the first two years.
Then, last Thanksgiving we were visiting his parents.
The bird was on the ground and he just suddenly picked her up.
She is in love with him now, and ignores me if everyone is in the same room.

There are many vocalizations she makes only for him, and some games she will only play with him.
She will lay sideways on one wing and coo till he tickles her breastbone.
If my SO's in the house, Puppy will crawl down my shirt and pants.
She'll get on the floor and walk to the opposite corner of the house to be with him.
She squawks if she gets to a closed door.

Of course when he's gone she can't be alone.
She HAS to be on me.

You know I am gaga over Kizzy and Yaya! They are just as cute as ever. Those dogs should be cloned!

As for the parrot, I've never seen one so entertaining! How rad is it that the dogs and bird even coexist in that close proximity?

Love the pictures - I could look at them all night - as always, thanks for sharing!!

I think it's safe to say I'm in love with Puppy  She's such a charismatic bird, reminds me of my sister's parrot, Charlie, back in Honduras. He likes to fight with pieces of carrot that my sister gives him as a treat. Thanks for sharing Kenny, both Yaya and Kizzy and Puppy are all adorable pets, you and your SO are very lucky to have them! ::)

Mama was a Shi Tzu and daddy was a Chihuahua who roamed into town with a bottle of tequila.

So we have furbabies, a featherbaby, and a thousand slimebabies.

Yes it is possible to potty-train birds.
I was able to potty train every bird I've had before, (actually it is partially the human that gets trained).

Puppy has been the hardest to potty train of all my birds.
I don't think it is because of the species, just the individual.
FOrtunately the droppings are small for a parrot.
You should see those Macaw bombs. :-o

Senegal parrots are the smallest true parrot and while Puppy can be noisy at times, Senegals are the most quiet of the parrots.
Less expensive too at only a few hundred bucks.
Macaws, Cockatoos, African Grays, and Amazons run in the thousands for a hand fed baby.
Senegals can be taught to talk human vocalizations and use them in appropriate times, though it is not as talented as the African Gray.

Dogs have been bred for millennia to love us and want to please us.
Not so with parrots; it is a challenge developing and maintaining the good personality of a parrot.
Even a hand fed domestically-raised baby parrot is just a couple generations removed from wild animals and if we are to meet their needs and have a mutually successful relationship the human has TONS to learn and much of it is not obvious.

If you are considering getting a parrot please FIRST read these two excellent yet inexpensive books:

http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Well-Behaved-Parrot-Barrons-Mattie/dp/0764136674

http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Companion-Parrot-Behavior-Mattie/dp/0764142135/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b

Do your homework and find a good breeder, preferably local so the baby bird doesn't have to be put on a commercial jet.
Get your hand fed baby right from the breeder soon after the bird is weaned.
Pet shop experiences or multiple homes make a successful outcome less likely, though not impossible.

Tons of birds are in the rescue circuit, but I'd not recommend those challenging birds with special needs till you have experience.
People just don't do their homework about the birds needs so the birds end up rejected, traumatized, miserable and damaged emotionally.
I think the biggest mistake is people underestimate the amount of socialization, stimulation, and interaction these intelligent animals need.
If you want a pet get a dog or cat.
If you want a buddy get a parrot.

Cats, and I imagine dogs, can take a long time to get used to someone/ something! The whole time my MIL was here (9 or 10 days), our cat let my MIL pet her twice (two, one, two, that's it!).

You sure do have a cute family! There I said it. I said it and I'm not sorry.

That last picture is a riot!

Kenny, you speak so much truth about birds as pets, and they seem like they pick a person to bond to A LOT! My friend has an African Grey and a Cockatoo. The cockatoo.... loves....me! He coos, and flirts, and sits by me. He will coo if she's on the phone with me even. The African Grey HATES ME, and loves her!
