Yay or Nay - Graduated five stone ruby band

I have a 4.9mm dark red ruby and some spare Diamond studs. Two in unmatched settings measure 3.8 mm and 3.9 mm. The other two studs are matching 3mm. The larger diamonds are SI clarity and 3 mm’s are I clarity. I’m itchy to set the ruby in something so I can wear it. Considering a few options here. Would you set the stones or would you wait to source better quality stones?

If you are going with a prong-set band, and you really want to wear that pretty ruby now, then I say go for it!

Your current stones provide a lovely graduated line-up, and it is easy peasy for a competent bench person to switch them out when you're ready to upgrade the 4mm/3mm diamonds.

If you are considering a bezel setting or a more complicated design, then I'd say wait until you have the stones in hand.

I’d say ”go for it now”.
if just doing a simple prong setting, you can always change out the diamonds later on but I think you’ll find the because of the beautiful ruby centre, you’ll barely pay attention to the diamonds!

Oh, you guys are enabling me . The diamonds look so awful in the pictures. They look white and clean to me in real life and seem to throw off good fire which makes it even more tempting! I am also toying with the idea of buying another gem stone or Diamond in the future and turn them into an open cuff, another staple missing in my collection. I have a few right hand rings, not super fancy by PS standard. I find myself wearing the same RHR everyday. Maybe a cuff will get more use. Oh, decision, decision!

First, let me say I love a five-stone ring, so the mounting you are contemplating is a winner in my book. Also, the ruby doesn't look dark... it looks perfect in color. But I digress. For me, I always try to buy the best I can afford. In the past, when I've rushed things, I inevitably wanted to upgrade soon thereafter. So that's something to consider. However, I also kind of feel like you have all the tools you need right now, and seem eager to set the ruby. Maybe that's exactly what you should do!

Exactly my concern if I set them, I might be bothered by the diamonds.
