I wanted a pair of WSS round studs. However, my gemmy Andrew Moline 7.5-8mm akoyas have brought out the persnickety pearl purchaser in me. I don't want just any WSS, I want really nice WSS. But wait, I don't really want to spend what I'd have to spend to get really nice WSS studs. So what's a girl to do? Well this girl decided that rather than compromise on the quality of the pearls themselves I could compromise on the shape to save some money. So I asked Andrew to show me what he had in a button shape pearl. He shared a few pics with me of the pair that he had available. I thought they looked beautiful so asked to see a picture of the pair in profile.

But I was admittedly disappointed with the fact that the pearls were somewhat differently shaped. I would have been happy with a matching set of either shape but wasn't sure about a "mixed" set. But then Andrew shared another pic showing the overtone and I was drawn back in. I kept coming back to look at the pictures over a few days because these pearls were so pretty from the top down views he shared which is how they would really be viewed when I wore them.

I wondered if the shape differences I was seeing in the pictures would be less noticeable when I saw the actual pearls at a normal viewing distance. So I decided to ask Andrew if I he would consider letting me see the pearls in person before deciding whether to go ahead with the studs purchase. He was completely on board with that and said that I would pay shipping of the pearls to me. If I decided to go forward with the project he would cover shipping the pearls back to him and then again to me when they were completed. If I decided NOT to go forward I would pay return shipping as well. So worst case scenario, I'd be out of pocket $60-100 (depending upon shipping costs to me and back to Andrew) if I decided to NOT go forward. I felt that was a fair risk to take.

I picked up the FedEx today, opened up the package while sitting in my car in the FedEx parking lot and immediately knew these were pearls that I would love to have as earrings. The shape differences, while still there, were not nearly noticeable enough in real life to me to nix them. So I got back out of the car and walked back into FedEx and shipped those babies right on back to Andrew. Can't wait to see my new studs hopefully sometime in the next few weeks.

My button studs arrived today!!! Wow :kiss2:. My biggest pearls prior to this point are 8.5 mm akoyas and these are approx. 12.7 mm so the size difference is significant. I love their presence. They came with over 9 mm jumbo backs but still droop a bit even with those. However they look perfect with my Levears stabilizing backs.

Well that's a big jump in size ! They look great. For me anything over 11mm needs to be button shaped to fit at all well. Enjoy

Oh. Those are a really lovely size on you @adlgel  You wear large white pearls beautifully, you look radiant in these!! Thank you for sharing this!!

The buttons are a clever choice - the diameter without the protrusion :appl:

I just love this so much. Even your wallpaper is fantastic!
I might have to try and be your earring twin.

@pearaffair hopefully you can find the size and then the pair that works for you. I honestly just open my jewelry box and gaze at them some times lol.

Oh that sounds just the best!!

These are beautiful!! I love button pearls---they are such a great alternative to more expensive round pearls. (Plus, how often is a less expensive option also easier to wear?!)

@Cinders yes the fact that these are button shaped absolutely makes them a bit easier to wear. In a smaller size pearl the wearability difference between true round and button shape is probably not as impactful as it is when you get into the larger sizes.
