Question, why are we viewing so many pics from the bottom of the diamond? Wouldn't you want to see how the diamond looks face up which is what you will see?
Please post face up pics if he has them so we can get an idea of how the diamond will look viewed face up in the setting.

Too see the warmth since that is where it can be viewed?? LOL?? I know most folks will view the diamond from the top when looking at my ring. But being a 2ct, I though the side view would also be important also to some degree(?). Not as important as the top down by any means..and I know prongs will cover some of the side view as well which will help.

Top view IDJ said looks very white from top view. I don't think that is where you see the warmth.

I guess I am not experienced enough to know how wide the J scale ranges, but it looks to be an average J to me. I wouldn't say it looks like an H, as the difference between the G and J is quite significant (as expected). Looks to me to have a little more tint than the J that I purchased, but it is also a little bigger. You can see from the side view there is noticeable color (against a white background). Once set in a ring and worn on the hand that will be less noticeable for sure.

Still, I don't think a side by side comparison with a G does you much good. I would want to see it side by side with a range of colors, G-J. I would also rather see it side by side with several I color stones and several J color stones to see how it compares to others with more similar grades. Again, IDJ is highly regarded and their opinion is most likely accurate, but from the pictures I am seeing it doesn't look like a super white J. Having said that, it is impossible to tell in photos so you will have to take their word for the time being.

Remember some J's which you may think are less yellow are, not because they are less tinted but because they are tinted grey. Body tone of diamonds can be yellow, grey, brown or green so show different color tint. A larger stone will show more tint too as the body of the stone being larger slows down the light so you need to compare stones of around the same size. The G will look a lot whiter that is why people pay more money for it if it looked the same as a J they would be questioning that. It is a case of accepting a color for what it is.

Thank you Pfunk and Pyramid for your thoughts. Intwrwsting, Pyramid, aboutbthe shades. I am wondering if the J I saw had a gray tone vs yellow (and maybe even my 1.1).

The J color is lower on the scale, something needs to give on my end for a 2ct. I saw a couple "J"s in person and was Aok with the one I saw that appearently at the top range of J. Being that IDJ sees thousands of diamonds, I feel it is worth the gamble based on his opinion of the color in person. Just pray it is more top scale J. Well, nothing to lose here since I am seeing it before setting. I can always return and move up for IDJ to search out an "I". Pray to avoid that if possible.

My advice would be to just trust IDJ and have the stone set by them. I bought a J, was neurotic that it would be too yellow for my fiance, got the diamond loose and continued to worry as I was ALWAYS still looking for the tint. It was always sitting against a white background and in my home with tan walls and the color worried me a bit. Then when it was set in the ring (white gold) I noticed it much less. Now that she has it and LOVES it I am so happy. I still notice the tint at times because I always look for it. She rarely notices it and doesn't look for it, and has assured me that what little tint she sees does not bother her at all. Everyone comments on how beautiful it is and no one looks for color and I assume never really sees it. Even though I notice the tint, it wouldn't bother me if I were the one wearing it either. I'd rather have the size and the bold flashes of color and white light that it throws off. That added impact from the sheer size of the facets is more of an eye catcher than any slight tint, to us at least.

Having said that, if noticing tint at times WOULD bother you, perhaps you should have it sent loose. You won't, however, get to see what it will actually look like when completed in its setting. Thats the only way you will truly be able to say whether it will work for you.

Pfunk, TY for sharing your story. It was helpful to read. I should have the loose diamond in hand Thursday. Hopefully that will tell me more. I'm going to try to avoid viewing it on white paper, but will view inside and outside. I will also try to keep in mind when set, may not appear as tined. As much as a PITB it will be, if I keep the diamond I will be sending it all back to IDJ to be set by them. I feel that is wise. Just a matter of the color at this point.

I keep forgetting you are not located in NY to see the diamond in person. So good idea to view the diamond in natural light when you get it. Make sure you have a secure diamond holder/tweezer so the diamond is secure and doesn't fall.

Natural light! Thank you! Have a set of tweezers I will use. Funny because I already envisioned it popping out of my hand and falling between the deck slats and being lost forever. Needless to say I will be not taking it out back on the deck. Only out front, and I'm going to sit down in the driveway and look at it carefully w a blanket beneath me. No joke.

I pray!! I have been reading that the diamond may look slightly less yellow than once it's set. That's going to be tricky to picture in my head. I'll be able hold it up next to my diamond and see how it compares. I will w/b

3 hours to delivery! Nervous! It will ONLY come down to color. Keep reminding myself that the worst case is I return and have IDJ locate an "I" diamond. Crossing fingers!
