Would you pass on a diamond with Medium Yellow fluorescence?

I have been working with Eternity by Yoni to source a diamond and a setting. He has been really good about trying to find me my specifications within my budget and assures me that the stone he has found is beautiful. It is 1.15 ct, I colour, eye clean SI1. It has a good HCA score. The only thing I can fault is that it has medium yellow fluorescence. The vendor has confirmed that it faces up white and doesn't have any negative effect on the stone.

I wanted to stay in a budget of about $4600 for the stone, would like I or J colour with medium or strong fluorescence (though I was imagining blue!), eye clean Si1, and preferably in the region of 1.15 to 1.2 ct. I will have a yellow gold setting.

Everything I have read on yellow fluorescence says to stay away! Would you pass on this stone? Do you think there might be a better stone for my money?

Thank you!

If it truly has no negative and comes with a price discount then I would possibly consider it. Yes, if you do ever intend to resell it you'll probably have some difficulty so perhaps make sure the place has a good upgrade policy.

Hi Solgen, thank you for replying :)) . It was priced about $1000 less than the same specs without the fluorescence so I believe (with my extremely limited knowledge!) that it was discounted to compensate. Yoni has got a lifetime upgrade policy and has also confirmed that if I am not happy with the stone, he will refund 100% of the cost.

Mostly I'm just not sure if medium fluorescence is always visible, regardless of the colour? I'm quite partial to blue fluorescence and with searching around a bit more, have found that I could likely also find a J colour stone with strong blue fluorescence within a similar price range. Do you think that the J strong blue would be a better move than the I medium yellow?

I would say no. Blue can sometimes be a positive thing in I or J color diamonds. I can only see yellow fl. being positive in a light yellow stone. I'd skip that one unless I could see it in several lighting environments before being set. I am afraid it might be more yellow in sunlight.

Re: Would you pass on a diamond with Medium Yellow fluoresce

A while ago, I bought a diamond with strong yellow fluorescence because I love fluor and already have a blue one. I could BARELY see anything with my cheapo Amazon UV light, and couldn't tell anything in sunlight, so I sent it back because it wasn't doing what I bought it for.

Labs might have a lower threshold for "strong" in yellow, compared with blue, or maybe it wasn't graded well, or maybe my UV light doesn't give out the right wavelength... but that was my experience: that it was almost impossible to see. You would definitely want to check it out in person, though, before setting!

Hi Evergreen, thank you for posting your experience, it's interesting that you couldn't see much of anything in terms of the fluorescence.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll have much of a chance to check them out in person as I'm in Australia and I think that it would be a longer and more expensive process to send them back and forward to view. With that in mind, I think that I'll pass on it as I won't ever know until it's set and with me. Yoni has a good returns policy, but it will be logistically a little more difficult just because of the distance.

I have sent back to Yoni to ask about these two stones:

Any opinions on them would be gratefully received!

Many thanks
