Would you go shopping in your Pyjamas?

Considering most of the time I don''t wear ACTUAL pjs, more like shorts and a tshirt...I have gone out like that. The store is only about a minute from my house and if I have to go as soon as I wake up...

Granted, I usually wear the same thing I''m hanging out with around the house that I sleep in, so...the answer is YES.

This thread inspired me to stop at the liquor store in my furry snow boots, pj pants (and top) and a winter coat. I wondered how awkward or liberating could it be. I walked in, bought my wine, and got back in the car. The cashier didn''t card me and the other customer didn''t look at me funny. I definitely felt like a schlepy college student, but I probably won''t do it again. It just goes against my whole put your best face forward mentality. I felt so devious...

In college, most definitely I would go to the store (or class) in flannel PJ pants!

Now, well, my PJs have been upgraded to yoga pants, leggins, or shorts and tees so yes, I would throw on a bra and go out no problem.

A nightgown or a robe, heck no!

In college I would stop in and get something usually late at night .. in my pj''s.

Do I care what other people wear? Nah. But please, keep your shoes on... it''s for your/their safety as well as being sanitary.

Am I offended by PJ''s? Ah... I have other things to worry about!!!!

In high school my best friend and I used to go to 5 AM Mass in our pajamas
with the legs rolled up and a long coat. We always felt a little naughty.

I''ll go in my workout clothes if I''m on my way to/from the gym. If I''m just lounging around, I''ll throw jeans on. In HS and college I had no problem going out in my PJs, but now it just feels weird.

I have been to McD for coffee at night, around 9, in my pajamas with my gf. Were are talking sit down, not drive thru. She was mortified. I was comfortable. I wouldn''t do it at breakfast rush hour.

Who cares what shoppers look like? Sometimes you have to run to the store late at night/early in the morning to pick up an essential item. I see no sense in dressing up to pick up a gallon of milk! I can't imagine supporting that store if there are other shopping options near by. So silly!

Personally, however, I will not shop in PJs. Workout clothes, yes. PJs, no. Though I'll be the first to admit there's not much difference between the two.

oh too true!

my husband once walked in the door from an overnight flight from korea, and i couldnt recognize the outfit he was wearing. i said "what are those clothes?" he got an evil sort of grin on his face, and i looked more closely and..."no! no - tell me you didn't!" (him chuckling)

yep, he'd gone from his hotel to the airport onto business class and back to NY, into the limo and home...in his jammies!

but here's the thing - altho i kinda freaked at the thought of it a bit, when i really looked, i *couldn't* tell the difference. it was a pair of navy interlock drawstring pants (and yes, he *was* wearing underwear!) and a long sleeved grey polo top - with buttons at the front and a grandpa collar. he was wearing runners and socks and i have to admit, there was not one scrap of difference between that top and the t-shirts he wears on the weekends. none. the pants were drawstring, but so are most of his weekend pants. they'd been cleaned and pressed at the hotel, and...well...i couldn't really argue it. he was clean and comfy and, to be honest, he looked kinda nice.

and he slept better on the plane! after i got over my initial reaction, i thought it was kinda funny.

lol - april - i totally want to be your friend and go out for late night coffee in jammies!! i''ve never done it, but i have some pretty respectable pj''s and it''s not too late to give it a try...

and MissMina, your story cracked me up!!

No, I would not, do not, have not gone shopping in my pajamas. First of all, I don''t think I''ve ever owned a pair of those flannel pj bottoms that I see people wearing out and about like they''re actually pants.
9.gif
Second, I am never so short of time that I can''t pull on a pair of jeans or something other than sleepwear. Third, what I wear behind closed doors is not for public viewing pleasure, and I feel the same about seeing what other people sleep and lounge in when I''m at the store. I feel rather voyeuristic seeing people in clothing they wear to bed!
38.gif
Sort of like TMI...I just don''t need to know what a total stranger sleeps in.

Personally after seeing what people do wear when they go grocery shopping, pajamas would be so much better.

Haha Whitby! Come with us any time! We are both over 50 and we go 3-4x a week for coffee late and to catch up. I have worn the pj''s more than once. (Flannel funky colored bottoms with a sweatshirt or pull over) So much fun, the staff knows us and laughs!

OK there is a cultural element to this that I think is lost in the passage of the story across the pond. The pyjama-bottoms-wearing trend over here bears no resemblance to the American college students I've seen heading in to class in cute VS yoga pants type PJs. I've racked my brains for a delicate and PC way to say this and this is the best I can come up with... certain clothing, worn in certain styles, has a negative connotation on this side of the pond.

The pyjama wearing among young women is seen in the same light as hoodys (with the hood up) on young men. It's got a very definite perception of being associated with antisocial behaviour or even outright thuggery. This is an old article but it's a well respected source. There are even Facebook groups devoted to protesting against the daytime wearing of pyjamas!

I'm not saying these perceptions contain truth. I have met some afficionados of this style of dress who have fit the description, and some who certainly do not. But honestly I'm not surprised to hear that Tesco is banning pyjama-clad customers. It's simply an extension of the already widespread hoody ban from one gender to its perceived equivalent fashion trend in the opposite gender.

oh april! this made me so homesick for my girlfriends back in australia! (i''m actually *in* australia for a visit at the moment - but just as a general concept...) this is exactly the sort of thing we''d do - tho perhaps to each other''s houses, rather than the shops - and it was always so much fun! i envy you your access to your friend/s.

bit sad now....

Could it be generational? I''ve noticed A TON of teens-twenties gals wearing what are clearly PJ bottoms at Walmart, Target, walking down the street, grocery stores, fast food joints. They travel in pairs or groups many times. I''ve even seen teen girls shopping with their parents -- their parents normally dressed, the teen in PJ''s.

I chalked it up to a corny rebellious trend. Though I must admit my sisters & I once made a middle-of-the-night run to a bodega in our PJs. Did not become a habit thankfully. And, at the time, it turned a lot of heads. My one sister was in a shortie set.

I''m dumbfounded by anyone who would think it is okay to roll out of bed and go to the store, or anywhere else. Are you also not brushing your teeth? Of course you aren''t. Ick.

YOU WILL NEVER NEED ANYTHING THAT BADLY. You just won''t.

The people who said they aren''t bothered by it have simply become immune from too many sightings of nitwits in nightwear. They used to laugh at you. Just like when we first saw the "pants on the ground" silliness. Just ''cause it''s become commonplace, doesn''t make you any less doofus-y.

And, yeah. See if you aren''t mortified to be standing on the street in your jammies after a fender bender.

I''ve gone out in jammies, but it''s really a technicality. I sleep in black knit sport pants, so you''d be hard-pressed to know they were used for sleeping: Pair them with athletic shoes and I look like I am on my way to the gym... But I may do this once every six months, and only during the winter when I have a coat over them anyway.

Jammie tops? No freakin'' way. If it actually LOOKS like sleepwear I''d not be caught dead out in it. And slippers? Not a chance.

Actually, of course I DO! It''s the first thing I would do when I wake up. What I wear to sleep, I might as well wear to the gym.

I used to when I was younger (teenager/college) but now I live in the downtown part of a big city (read: gross sidewalks) so I''m a bit paranoid about in-the-house clothes getting grimy dirt on them.

Hmmm maybe in solid colored sweats but definitely not printed pajama pants.

I haven''t, but I guess I would... it doesn''t bother me. As long as people are clean and covered, I don''t care what people wear!

Work-out clothes from the gym???
Yes.

My flannel loungewear I wear in the house?
No way.

must be an age thing.

few years ago I was in the Houston airport and a grown (!) woman walked past me in flannel PJ''s, fuzzy dirty slippers and carrying a bed pillow.
needless to say, she got quite a few looks

Though I think it is pretty tacky to head out onto the town in PJs ... is it THAT different than the scrubs I routinely see medical folks wearing around? Panda/rainbow/cloud/teddy bear print pants & matching tops ....

I agree with Curly Sue, pajama pants are pajama pants. Usually flannel or striped or patterned. You couldn''t mistake them for anything but PJs.

I joined a gym recently and I drive to and from in yoga pants, and if I have to stop at the grocery store, I will, but I also walk for exercise in yoga pants too, so I think people are used to seeing other people in work-out gear. I think yoga pants and colored tees are nice looking.

someone COULD be just as offended by work out gear - there are any number of places to draw the line. Some people won''t go out without a full palate of makeup, a perfectly coiffured coif, all of their jewelry, a manicure, and the latest and greatest designer wear. others draw the line at not being naked. There are so many places to draw the line between that I think to a large extent it is best to live and let live and allow others to draw their own lines. Too much concern about others having a contrived appearance just seems overly superficial to me and starts leaning on me philosophically and I find myself very irritated at that way of thinking.

I''ve gone in yoga pants and a t-shirt, but not full blown pj''s. I have gone thru the bank drive thru in pj''s but I wasn''t getting out of the car, so I don''t think it counts as going somewhere in pj''s.

No. I feel bad going out in sweats.

I am very anti-public pajama wearing. It''s ridiculous and I get so tired of seeing girls and young women out shopping in pajamas. Put on some damn clothes! The ones who do it in my area are obviously not rolling out of bed and walking out of the house. They''re putting together matching pajama "outfits" complete with Uggs or Ugg slippers, of course. When did that become cute? The same girls love to wear those Nike running shorts that are super popular with contrast trim and color blocking on the side to go out shopping with Uggs when it''s 30 degrees out. Oh and a North Face fleece jacket and a sloppy ponytail with a ribbon bow. SO STUPID. But as far as the ban goes, if someone is covered I don''t see the need for it.

Delster-interesting that it''s the equivalent to sketchy guys wearing hoodies in the UK. That makes the ban make more a bit more sense.

No, never have, never will. I get dressed before leaving the house.

Most definitely not an age thing in my opinion. I have seen PLENTY of older women walking around Meijer and Kroger in their flannel pajamas. I''m in college and I REFUSE to wear pajamas outside of my apt. In fact I do not own one stich of clothing that is flannel/plaid (other than my plaid converse

)

I really think it''s a certain TYPE of person, not an age... I''m 22 BTW. I never would wear pajama pants even when I was in H.S. either.
