Curious if you would buy jewelry pieces with better specs than your ER?

Or is your ER the benchmark and everything else is equal and/or lower in specs, so they won't "outshine" your ER?

I've certainly bought other pieces that are "better" than my original e ring. Its value is sentimental, really, we were much younger, and poorer, then.

Yes, absolutely! I buy as much as possible preloved (including my ER, which is I /SI2). So it's always a tradeoff of budget vs what's available vs that thing I just saw that I never knew I needed but now I absolutely MUST have. The stats for each piece are what they are.... A few pieces considerably 'better' than my ER, which bothers me not at all.

I don't have an ER anymore, and the last significant diamond that I purchased was a 1.19ct E VS1 EC that I wear as a RHR, and I seriously doubt if I would go higher/better than E and VS quality if I were to buy another sizable diamond.

DK :))

My engagement ring is an F VVS2, but I certainly wouldn’t rule out anything with better specs! I’m a magpie.

I didn't pick my ER diamond. As far as better specs on my other diamonds? That is subjective. I have a K AVC that has a lower color than my original diamond (now set in a pendant) and a completely different cut but I don't consider it a worse diamond. I have some lower clarity diamonds in earrings but clarity matters a little less there. My EC wedding ring had to be a bit higher clarity because of the cut but that is because I want eye clean. I'm getting ready to set some OMC's in a bracelet...how can I compare the charm and history of 100 year old hand cut with my MRB ER diamond?

I love them all for what they are. I would like to love more.... ;)2

Absolutely. My engagement ring is my grandmothers centre diamond reset. It's quite small and has huge inclusions that are absolutely visible and it is not eye clean. I'm sentimental about it because of the heirloom bit but it is objectively not a great diamond. So pretty much anything I get now would "outshine" it. Does it matter to me though? Nope. :)

Definitely. My ER (when finished, diamond just came in!) will be 1.04ct K VVS1 centre stone with 0.26 TCW halo. The stone is stunning, and I wanted a warm colour. Because of the halo, I also can't go bigger on size (it also faces up big for its carat weight).

At some point in the distant future I would love:

A sizeable (2.5-3ct)OEC in a very warm colour

A decent sized (1.5ct ish) step cut with very high colour (D-E) and clarity

A large pear

All would obviously cost considerably more than my ER, and are a) not currently in our reach cost wise but also b) are not what I wanted for an ER: these are rings I want as pieces to wear occasionally on my right hand, for different looks to go with different outfits

Yeah, why not? I’m not ideologically opposed to getting something else that’s of “better” quality (however we define better).

Every day and twice on Sunday. No sentimentally for me about my ER, its a ‘thing’ And 20 years on realizing the dated, misogyny laced history of ER rings as showing possession, I don’t think I would have wanted one. But that’s me.... I’m a pretty independent minded soul.

Probably not, the diamonds in my 5 stone e-ring are all I-J VS2-SI2 ACAs/AGS000s and are utterly spectacular in my eyes. I likely wouldn't fork out the dosh for better specs, because to me they are totally perfect and gorgeous and great value (I'm not colour sensitive). I hate paying for a difference I can't see.

Although I recently selected a diamond for a RHR, a .49ct E SI2 emerald cut. Though the colour is superior to anything else I own, the cut is more subtle than my RBs, and it's significantly smaller than my e-ring. I like my e-ring to outshine all of my other pieces.

i have sets.. no engagement ring or wedding rings as such.
My RH =1ct E VVS asscher ER and asscher eternity or carre eternity depending on my mood LOL...
My LH= 0.12ct FGB ER and a pink and blue melee bead set as wedder- my current avatar.
each set has their own flavour. each piece of jewelry i purchase, will have a specific purpose and therefore a different feel than an "ER".

I guess, with each purchase, i get better at choosing, so i would purchase better as i go along on my journey. I also buy the best stone for the project that i can with the budget i have at the time.

oh and i have many rings and earrings! :)

As a jeweler, it is great to see so many who buy what they want when they want and understand the value of sentiment for the original engagement ring instead of using the quality on paper of the starting ring as a limit to future treasures.

Even more gratifying are the comments that lower colors or clarities are not lesser qualities to the user, but grades on paper that can effect the price, but not the beauty of the gems involved.

As always, you must see the diamond to see if it rocks your world, regardless of the paper grade. ;)2

I have done this very thing. However, I wont compromise on cut & all my larger (than .20) are Ideal AGS, or Excellent GIA. My studs are H's, my earring jackets are F-G, my 3 stone pendant center stone is a G & sides are H ( I cannot see any difference whatsoever), my huggies are F-G, my bracelet is F-G, & my eternity is F-G all in 14K white gold. My left hand ring is a J, ACA with H melee in platinum. I love size so my ring is a J. LOL I have ZERO problem with wearing all of them at the same time & nothing clashes. If you find a something with a great price, buy it. If you find something with great style, buy it. If you find something with a great price & great style, buy it. Most importantly, If you find something you love, buy it.
