So I''m in the market for a diamond... and this group seems to be very helpful to people. I am looking for

a round stone
between 1 and 1.25
G or better
Ideal or Excellent Cut
VS2 or Better

Can I do it for in the 6K range?

How much difference will there be between 1 and 1.25?

I''ve been to a couple jewlers and no one could really show me much so I still don''t have a sense on the size?

And, I know everyone asks this, but I''ve heard a lot of people going into the Diamond District in NYC and supposedly getting great deals, but everyone on here says you can do better online? Which is right?

If I did want to go into the city, I have one shop to go to, but are there any recommended places? How about tax? Do online sellers charge tax? I believe in the city, it would be 8+%?

Any help is appreciated and thanks,

Chris

Reading the tutorial under Knowledge is a good place to start.

You can do it for 6K, but I think your options are a little limited. You could certainly drop to H SI1.

If you do venture out in person, Excel Diamonds is located in the Diamond District, and Good Old Gold is in Massapequa Park.

Flfddy, welcome to the forum. You can run a price comparison from the front page. E.g. for $6k you can get a 1.10ct GIA or AGS graded G - VS2 stone online.

Online vendors only charge tax when they ship in their state. However, in many states you should pay your own state tax even if your vendor didn't charge you for online purchase. You might want to check it out.

You can get a good deal in the NY diamond district. Just make sure you're comparing apples to apples:
* Ask for GIA or AGS graded diamonds.
* Make sure you can verify your stone with independent appraiser that works for you, not the vendor.
* Ask about return policies.

good luck...
