I''ll own up to it - I''m an apple. Jeans aren''t made for me, either. After reading everyone''s responses, I''m kindof wondering which shape they ARE made for!

Bananas! Which would make sense if they really are the most common shape, as the study (and my personal experience) suggests.
Hmm. I''m a banana, and jeans don''t fit me, either! They are always too big in the hips/butt.

Pear? Tiny, but curvy. 33-25-35 (104 lbs) shopping is hard.

I''m pear too (Ithink)

.

BTW, LAJennifer I saw the pictures that you posted a while back of you in your wedding dress - your dress looked gorgeous

Thanks, Londongirll! I don''t post many pics (very tech challenged) so I feel like I mostly go unnoticed. I loved that dress - it was only $300.

Jeans - I''ve got junk in the trunk (5''2", 104 lbs, 36 years old), so the following fit pretty well:

AG - Angel size 26
Joe''s Jeans size 26
Lucky - size 27
Stitch''s - size 25
Ann Taylor Loft - size 2P
Not Your Daughter''s Jeans - size 0P, or 2P
Baby Phat (I know - but they fit my bootay) - size 3

The following are No Go''s:
Paige (no room for my butt)
Seven (makes my butt look wider)
True Religion (tried a size 28 and couldn''t get them past my thighs)
Hudson (LOL, you''re kidding right?)

I''m an hourglass - my measurements are 38 bust, 29 waist (27 pre-baby), 39 hips, and I''m 5''9". The thing is, though, that I put on weight in the butt, hips & boobs, but never in the arms or back - so I guess I gain weight more like a pear type - my arms & ribcage always stay thin.

I''m a banana too, and jeans are always way baggy in the butt on me. I recently bought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans (I didn''t even know they still made them!!), and bought them a size smaller than usual. They are straight legs, and they fit me great. There is a little spandex in them, so they are still comfortable in the waist, but they don''t get all baggy as the day goes on!

I'm a pear, but I always knew I was a pear.

Waist is 12' smaller than hips, and my bust is ~4' smaller than my hips. I also gain weight first in pear distribution, which stinks! Makes me even more pear-ey . . .

that is me!!! Not the measurements but I lose weight up top first and the booty last, boo! I always have problems with dresses. Even when I was 115 lbs I wore a size 7 jeans.

Man, I can't keep up with the cut threads but body shapes I know something about!

I don't think it's the bust size alone that makes a true hourglass though...what about women who have a larger bust, but small shoulders? That may not be the 'real' definition of an hourglass shape, but IMO, the width of the shoulders play into the overall shape as well. Maybe that's what confuses some women about the pear/hour glass thing.

Yes, waist, hip AND shoulders absolutely play into things (which may be why many Triangles/Pears think they are Hourglasses). You can be a busty Triangle/Pear or a flat-as-a-board Hourglass.

I'm a big fan of designer Bradley Bayou's The Science of Sexy and it is cheeeeap in paperback. CBS story + book excerpt to download

For way too many years I thought I was an HG because by measurements I am -- once things are hoisted/poured into my "foundation garments"
9.gif
I'm fairly busty and waist is 11 inches smaller than high hip, 13 inches smaller than low hip.

But hello...I am a total Rectangle/Banana. [Not a tall long-legged Charlize Theron type, but a Rectangle no less.] Practically *no* waist definition and a flat but wider butt.

So: Look at yourself dead on - 2D. Ignore where you carry your weight, your height, your leg length etc though those will all affect what looks best on you.

* Are your shoulders more or less equal to your hips? Then you're either a HG (Jessica Simpson) or a Rectangle (Queen Latifah). Got waist definition (do you curve in a noticeable way)? Then you're an HG.

* Are your shoulders wider than your hips? Then you're an Inverted Triangle (CZ Jones). Hips wider than shoulders? A Triangle/Pear. (J Lo, JLH, and, shockingly, Halle Berry!).

Sometimes you will be just *barely* one way or the other. Halle Berry, for instance, is just barely a Triangle/Pear so while she always looks gorgeous it's pretty easy for her to look like an HG in the right clothes.

Apples are usually ITs or Rectangles with more weight in the middle. Ignore this category and focus on your shoulder-to-hip relationship to start. Bradley can help you take it from there.
31.gif
It's all pretty much like diamonds...ya gotta consider the angles (or lack thereof!).

ps IMO Imogen Lamport's style blog is another great resource.

Apple, I think. I''m 36-27-33, always bigger on top than on the bottom, fairly wide shoulders and I show weight easily in my face (ugh).

My hips have gotten slightly wider in the last year or two, though! Maybe I categorized myself incorrectly?

Vesper, we're built similarly. I'm 5'9" and 38-27-38.5. Definitely an hourglass. I think clothes are made more for pears than hourglasses, though--I always have trouble finding dresses that fit up top!

Banana/straight, and I really don''t like it--makes me feel lots less feminine because I don''t have a well-defined waistline.

Another hourglass here - I''m 5''6" and 37-25-37.5 (I *think* so-I use the metric system, so I''m not very good with feet and inches!)
Vesper, that''s interesting, when I gain weight it''s exactly the same with me-butt, hips and boobs only! Usually I have the opposite problem though - I lose weight when I''m under stress and I have to try to regain it.

I''m a banana. I need to lose 1 inch in the waist to become an hourglass!

Currently, I''m a pear by this definition, but not strictly.
I prefer the ones that Trinnie and Susannah use - many more options, which
is more realistic imho.
Is anyone not as lazy as me to look em up?

I''m a pear, always have been, always will be.

I can''t measure my hips/bust now as I''m 19 weeks pregnant, but from my recollection, my hips are 37" and my bust is 32" (not even, I do have a 30" bra that fit 5 months ago).

When I lost 20 pounds two years ago, I did lose in my thighs, but I lost first in my stomach, arms, etc. I don''t think there''s anything I could do to make my body give up its butt/thigh fat, and I wouldn''t want to because I know I need some fat somewhere to live. You only get to see my thighs in a bathing suit so it''s a good place to hide it.

I will say that being a not yet totally noticeably pregnant pear is kind of annoying because my hips have just widened/thighs have put on fat, but my tummy bump isn''t that big yet, so I just look like a pear and an apple at the same time.

Definitely

, I had never experience problem with jeans

I'm a banana, 32-27-36

I have to buy small clothes, since they change "fake sizes" I mostly get Bebe jeans size 25 or 26, those fit me great!!
9.gif

Armani Exange are good too, mostly size 0 or 2.
Some others brands I have to get 23 or 24
33.gif
, I always try to buy clothes at the same places, i hate to take 5 different sizes of jeans trying to find out wich one fit me well
38.gif

I''m totally a pear. No chest to speak of, tiny waist, and always put on weight in my butt/thighs.

Using those measurements, I'm a banana.
6.gif
I always thought I was a cross between an apple and an hourglass. Hmmm. Guess I was wrong! My bust and hips measure exactly the same, and my waist is 8" smaller than both hips and bust. I wear size 25 jeans pretty consistently from brand to brand.

Erg. I used to be an hourglass, but then my sand shifted south. In my early 20''s, I was 36-24-36. I was 37-25-38 at 30. A few years and 1 baby later and I am definitely a pear. Either way, jeans were and are a real pain to find thanks to my waist-to-hip ratio. I do like the Joe''s Jeans Honey cut, but man are they pricey.

Incase anyone''s keen for a squiz, here''s a link to Trinny & Susannah''s 12 different
body shape definitions that I was referring to earlier..
I don''t usually agree with these kinda things, but I personally liked this one when I came across it in a mag recently, as the real life women used make it easier to figure out which you are..plus they advise on what (not) to wear, of course! lol..

I am a cross between a pear and a skittle on their chart..

For those that don''t like links (and if Musey doesn''t mind?), I could bring across the pis...?

Bust: 32
Waist: 29
Hips: 37
Height: 5''0"
Weight: @118lbs

I chose pear.

I do not like the way I look - when I first got pregnant with my son (November 2007) the weight gain went right to my butt, hips and thighs and I can''t get rid of it.
14.gif
Before baby I was a banana - very skinny and pretty much no curves.

I''m a pear! Waist is 12'' smaller than hip, bust is 4'' smaller than hip. Pear describes me exactly... but I never thought of myself as that because of the stereotypical image that comes with that label, I guess!

I''m right there with you Musey, mathematically speaking! Wow. Never would have described myself as pear!

My waist is 11" smaller than my hips, and my bust is 3" smaller than my hips. So pear, right? I do have broad shoulders so I look well proportioned, though.

And it''s funny-my hips aren''t really that wide, but my butt is pretty bubbly, so that''s why my hip measurement is so much bigger than my waist measurement.
