Let's get things straight... There are different customs about engament rings in different countries, it is not obvious where each contributor to this forum is from. For example, Romanians do not use engagement rings (and the international custom has not really caught up either), althrough is not unusual for a wife to receive a ring or another piece of valuable jewelry immediately AFTER the wedding. AND, each important wedding aniversary (1 year, and then 5, 10... at least in theory) comes with a ring (or a signifficant piece of jewelry). The 1 year aniversary always means an important ring (just as an e-ring), which may contain a dimond just as likely as any other precious stone of simmilar value. At least my family and circle of friends do follow these customs, even if I would suspect that the practice is somewhat diferent in each region of the country (there are 3, at least as different as US states are, as far as I have seen...). In accord with the above, I voted for getting a second ring for the aniversary!
Clown..I didn't specify but it could really be either...however you want to spin it. If you want to keep the original ring and get an entirely new anniversary ring....or keep just the setting and upgrade the stone. I think it's MORE about the stone than the setting though...
Absolutely! But only because I was never that happy with the first stone I had (J, SI2, 1.50 ct, large table). If I had gotten a really great color, cut & clarity the first time, I wouldn't have upgraded to the 1.90 ct. Shrinkage did set in, though. My fingers are a size 5 with 5.25 knuckles, so anything larger is pretty much over the top. However, I did try on a 3 carat at the LA Jewelry Mart yesterday, and wow! The 4 carat I tried on was just waaayyy too big, though. So it's nice to know I have my limit - heehehe.
I voted to keep the old one and get a new one, which is sort of what I did when my 10 year anniversary past in June.
Actually, the truth is I never got engaged when I got married. About 5 years after we were married, I went and bought myself a 1920's diamond ring, with three OMC diamonds. The center diamond was approximately .75 points. I wore it as an engagement ring, even though I bought it myself.
When I graduated from Nursing school in 2000, my husband decided to get me a something for my graduation. I decided to take the center stone from my 1920's ring and set it in a more traditional style e-ring setting and that is what I have worn as an "e-ring", until I got the new one last month.
So, actually, my new ring is kind of like an engagement ring and 10 year anniversary ring rolled into one.
