My MIL’s partner got his booster - I’m not sure if he got the Moderna or Pfizer initially, but he was OK’ed and he got it and I’m very glad he did. He was the sole care giver to my bed-bound MIL for over a year thanks to Covid restrictions do he’s been under a lot of stress. We’ll make sure my MIL gets hers when she’s due. And my hubby and I will get ours when that’s authorized - if only because we need to be able to help with my MIL’s care.

Mixing COVID Vaccine Boosters May Be Better Option: Study​

A new US government study shows it isn't risky and may even be a good idea to mix, rather than match, COVID-19 vaccines when getting a booster dose.

The study also shows mixing different kinds of vaccines appears to spur the body to make higher levels of virus-blocking antibodies than they would have gotten by boosting with a dose of the vaccine the person already had.

If regulators endorse the study findings, it should make getting a COVID-19 booster as easy as getting a yearly influenza vaccine.

"Currently when you go to do your flu shot nobody asks you what kind you had last year. Nobody cares what you had last year. And we were hoping that that was the same — that we would be able to boost regardless of what you had [previously]," said the study's senior author, John Beigel, MD, who is associate director for clinical research in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.


"But we needed to have the data," he said.


Studies have suggested that higher antibody levels translate into better protection against disease, though the exact level that confers protection is not yet known.

"The antibody responses are so much higher [with mix and match], it's really impressive," said William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, who was not involved in the study.

Shaffner said if the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sign off on the approach, he would especially recommend that people who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine follow up with a dose of an mRNA vaccine from Pfizer or Moderna.


"It is a broader stimulation of the immune system, and I think that broader stimulation is advantageous," he said.

Minimal Side Effects​

The preprint study was published late Wednesday in medRxiv ahead of peer review, just before a slate of meetings involving vaccine experts that advise the FDA and CDC.

These experts are tasked with trying to figure out whether additional shots of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are safe and effective for boosting immunity against COVID-19.

Other friend with baby had covid the second time, second time under one year old had no symptoms of any kind. This is FACT! I'm not into asking other friends about their covid or vaccine status, but assume they are all ok, no kid died or was in the hospital, that I know of, from my circle of friends, so far, FACT.

@Gloria27 I'm living in France, far from dystopian here! We have a high vaccination rate (85.7% over 12 y/o) and mask mandate indoors. And you can show them a vaccination cert or a negative test if you want to dine indoors (remember, one takes the mask off for eating).

So we're today at 22% ICU capacity. Which is a relief for healthcare
professionals and potential patients.

You are right - kids don’t like shots UNTIL they are able to understand the reasoning behind them. They are tired of masking, tired of social distancing in school and on the bus, tired of dealing with COVID - just as we all are. She knows that their best hope for being rid of it all is vaccination. I find her reasoning not a matter of brain washing but rather a good understanding of the subject matter. I honestly don’t think kids are being ‘brainwashed’ into receiving a shot. She is nine years old and has had her fair share of vaccination shots in her life. She now understands the why behind them. A moment of discomfort for a shot is a small price to pay for continued good health.

Studies and clinical trials have been going on for quite some time regarding vaccinating ages 5-11. So far everything points to safe and effective results. It was reported last week that we might expect the go ahead after the first week or so of November. Your statements would have applied to the beginning of vaccines for many; clearly the fear mongering didn’t work on everyone. Not sure if you have children or grandchildren in this particular age group but if so I would advise you to read up on the studies so far.

My 5yo is super excited. He knows that even if he were to come down with COVID that he would more than likely be fine but he also understands that him being vaccinated is the best way to help keep other people from getting sick too (people like his Grandmother who have autoimmune disease). And many don't want to go to school, clean their rooms, eat their veggies, etc. Is that brainwashing, when they are told either they have to or it's good for them? Hopefully you don't apply "do as you will" to all facets of your life. I assume you expect the laws to protect you.

This is more a vent, but I do expect to get a booster when I can, and I'm vaccinated.

I just came back from a work trip to Phoenix, AZ.

I hail from Chicago so had a rude awakening about how cavalier everyone was even in a big city...so much so that 99% of people I saw did not bother to wear masks anywhere. The only mask wearers were not white, go figure.

I was expected to go to the office and do work-related outings with colleagues. I foolishly assumed they were taking reasonable precautions at the workplace. No proof of vaccines, no survey, no masks, nothing.

Multiple people on my team flew in from other cities across the country and were extremely uncomfortable. I was really upset that my manager didn't mention it to us. The whole trip was illuminating about the company's culture.

I have since gotten quite sick and was obviously worried about COVID-19. Home tests were negative but I am so frustrated with my company for putting me and other colleagues at risk.

It won't be the only reason, but I intend to look for a new job.
