Hi guys,

I was just wondering if the following type of setting reduces the overall brilliance/scintillation/fire of an ideal cut diamond? (I have read that ideals don''t let light in from behind anyway so there should be no reduction in brillance)

No, as you have heard, with a well cut diamond the setting won''t matter.

Now, just a couple thoughts on this setting from the female perspective.

1. It is a pretty setting, but not typical. Do you know for sure your girl likes this style? has she expressed an interest in this type? If not, you might want to rethink things. Going with a very different setting can be tricky as to whether she would like it or not. A bit of a gamble....

2. A wedding band is not going to sit flush with that. You would probably have to have one made to fit, and then she probably wouldn''t want to wear the WB alone, as it would look really different.

Just some food for thought.

That is a gorgeous setting. Very modern and minimalistic. I think it will really bring out the best in the diamond. As Ellen as stated, well cut diamonds will reflect the light back to the eye from the top (table) so the setting will not diminish the fire and sparkle of the diamond one bit.

Ellen also brings out 2 other good points with regards to the wedding band not being flush and the design isn''t typical. If she likes this style, it''s a beautiful setting. Also as to the wedding band, it looks like it may be best worn on a different hand unless the band is a curved type.

Yes I am sure she likes the setting - she actually chose this style as she prefers minimalistic and contemporary. I know is isn''t really to the tastes of most US gals (usually) but in the UK this sort of ring is very popular. I hadn''t considered the wedding band issue so that will surely give me a headache in the months/years to come! Thanks for your input.

Is SHE likes it, then it''s perfect. And it really is a pretty setting.

Like I said, you may have to have a WB custom made. I would just start scouting the local jewelers, ask to see their custom work, and hopefully you''ll find one who can create the appropriate band.

Good luck!

Thanks Ellen, as always you provide helpful and pertinent information (as well as reassuring me!).

They should teach guys about all this stuff at high school! I really am a typical clueless man. I know loads about sport though!!!!
