Came across this 2015 PriceScope thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/jewelers-mutual-offers-preventive-repairs.216768/, when JM announced that they were going to offer preventative repair coverage to their customers. Good idea right? If small things like loose prongs get repaired earlier, there's less of a chance for more expensive damage or loss down the line.

However, I've also seen a lot of other advice given saying "only use your jewelry insurance for a catastrophic loss" and a preventative repair certainly does not qualify.

What do people think? Has anyone asked JM if their policy would be negatively affected by filing a preventative repair claim?

I don't have any direct evidence either way on this, but I have asked this question directly to the JM people, and for exactly the reason you describe. They say no. The explanation is also exactly as you describe. People who stay on top of their maintenance are less likely to have a catastrophic loss later.

It would make no sense to offer it to help prevent large losses, then punish people for using it.
