Wiggle room for re using setting?

If I want to re set round stones in 3 prong martini stud earrings.... how much wiggle room is there for size of stone?

For instance... if original round stones were approx. 6.85mm... how big/small can I go to use same settings? Is there more than .05mm wiggle room? Or even that much? Can I go as high as 7mm round... or really do I need to focus on finding stones practically exact same measurements (within 6.83- 6.87).

If not exact same... is it easier/more secure to re set slightly smaller... or slightly bigger measurements?

Were the settings custom made for your stones or were they stock settings? If they were stock, it is possible they are either made for a 6.5mm or 7mm stone. You''d probably have to go to a jeweler to find out your size range for the settings.

I just reused my old setting. It was for a 5.3 mm stone and apparently had enough wiggle room of 0.5 mm for a 5.7 mm stone.
