I''ve been reading on some posts that people often prefer smaller tables? Could someone please explain why this is? What advantage would well cut smaller table stones in the 2 ct range have vs. ones with larger tables? Thanks
The more the table is increased in size the more likely you're getting light leakage under the table which reduces brilliance/brightness within the diamond. Decreasing table size generally gives you a nice crown hight which provides for excellent dispersion.
Why,then, have I read so many posts saying that in the olden days jewellers preferred stones with large tables.
What about large tables did they prefer?
Gary's comment is right on. Tables can be up around the 60-62% range IF YOU'VE GOT THE PROPER crown/pavilion angles. The sad fact is that most of the time those larger tables are coupled with nasty crown/pavilion angles.
An example of this can be seen in the Queen of Hearts diamonds. They go against the grain of what I typically look for in square modified brilliants as their tables are always larger than their total depths. However they are cut to exceptional crown/pavilion angles which produces a really bright stone.
