Why is it so hard for vendors to take my money?

Well, what a disapointing experience.

After finding PS a month or so ago, I''ve already resolved to buy an AGS 0 (or its GIA equivalent) from one of the respected online vendors here. But, of course, recommended by all you fine folks here is to go look at some B&M stores so that I can view differences in color, clarity, etc. so that I''ll know what to look for and buy online! Good advice of course!

So, I went to one jeweler who was going out of business. Of course, due to the liquidity of diamonds, his prices on stones weren''t very discounted, and I quite understand this. The lady there was very helpful and could see by my questions that I obviously knew more than the average consumer (thanks to you guys!), but their inventory was fairly limited. Still, I got to see the "differences" between E and G and also got to see how .75 and 1.0 carat stones look side by side.

Then there was...the mall. Oh man..never again! I went to four "jewelers" at our local mall. What a waste of time! Not a single one (Kay''s, Belden''s, Littman''s, and Gordon''s) carried a single GIA or AGS-certified stone. And only two of the stores apparently wanted any business at all from me--not that I would have bought from there, but they couldn''t have known that--as evidenced by their lack of presence! I waited for 10 minutes at BOTH Gordon''s and Kay''s without anyone saying even hello to me while I was leaning over the engagement ring section! I suppose no one there works on commission, huh, cause I know I would have been there with bells on if someone was looking at my most expensive merchandise!

At least Belden''s and Littman''s wanted to talk to me. Belden''s was cute though. I said I was here to look at diamonds, and she responded with "Diamonds? Like.... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... engagement rings... ... or...?" I responded with "Sure, or if you have anything loose--I just want to see what you have available." To which she replies, "Oh, well we can order you loose diamonds!" I''m thinking, "You''re a jewelry store--I would hope you can order them!" :P I asked if she had anything AGS or GIA certified, and she replied, "Well, all of our stones are IGI certified!" Oh well.

Littman''s had no idea what an ASET or idealscope were, but, again, at least they talked to me.

Sorry for the vent, but I suppose I just figured that when I walk in (still nicely dressed from church that morning too!) and stand over their most expensive inventory, that I''d at least receive the time of day, you know?

Hopefully there are some real jewelers in my area that carry GIA and AGS stones so I can compare apples to apples, y''know?

Thanks for listening and for all the help thus far!

You need to go to upscale, independent retail jewelers in your area. Next time you dress up, make a visit or two. They may not know about IdealScopes or ASET scopes, either, but they may give you a better feeling about how the jewelry business can be conducted. Maybe not, sad to say. A store really going out of business is not a great place to make a major purchase anyway. If you have a problem, they''ll be closed.

The best of the vendors will really cater to your needs very well. You really should have no problem, but I know plenty of consumers seem to face many difficult choices

Darn, that is why I like to shop online. hehee Here are some thread''s in here that maybe helpful for size comparison https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/helpful-threads-archive.72078/

I agree with Dave; it could be that you aren''t visiting the right type of jeweler.

Stick to smaller, upscale stores that carry ideal stone (and who know that cut doesn''t mean shape! LOL). You''re more likely to have better luck in those.

The good news is that if you find an AGS (American Gem Society) member store in your area...that they WILL
know what an ASET is!
