certs. like feathers, clouds, naturals, crystals, etc.

I've wondered the same thing. Besides the grading report, is there somewhere else on the net to look for the explanation for what the symbols mean that any consumer has access to?

The AGS does not spell out the inclusions under "keys to symbols" like the GIA does and we certainly wish that they would... But they do provide a visual key to the symbols which appears on the flap of each lab report, it is usually folded under when the report is placed in the blue folder. It looks like this:

R/T,
Thanks for the post. Appreciate it.

Wow, that's a lot of symbols. Have you've seen all these symbols used by AGS at one time or another? WHich ones are the worst?

Gabi Tolkowsky made a presentation in moscow that we should have 2 copies of cert's. 1 for trade and one for the public.

(He has absolutely no intention to hide information or be unethical)

but "Wow, that's a lot of symbols. Have you've seen all these symbols used by AGS at one time or another? WHich ones are the worst?"
This thread is an example of why it might make no sense to confuse diamond buying with so much information that might be quite useless to the man or woman on the street.

Gabi dislikes terms like modifiead brilliant and modified square also

We've seen most of them at one time or another... Which ones are worst? Hmmm, well we're personally not very fond of laser drill holes, cavities, knots, twinning wisps, chips, cleavages, or bruises and won't buy any stones that contain them... Maybe it would have been easier to mention what we find acceptable

No problem...we'll take a 1.0 D-IF and polish off the pointed culet!

(It's what you forgot.

You forgot the poor cutter who was fired and to wonder what will become of his family since he wasted that .002 of a carat and lost 20% of the value of the diamond. Poor silly ex cutter.

Wink

Not sure what is missing from among the requiremets, but I am sure there is a thread with a serious buying demand like this

only it was 1.5 carats, not 1....

Cut Nut,
although I have a lot of respect for your opinion and expertise, I definitely have to disagree with you here. in response to this question, "Wow, that's a lot of symbols. Have you've seen all these symbols used by AGS at one time or another? WHich ones are the worst?" instead of suggesting this a reason to keep information from a consumer in an attempt to not confuse them, I take the exact opposite view. i think the answer to this question would be to provide more information and educate the consumer so that his question is answered and he can make a more informed decision. After all, isn't that what this forum is all about. Information is power, and the goal of this forum and elesewhere should be to empower the consumer. If someone doesn't want to know about all the details of a diamond grading report, then that's their perogative. they can just ignore it. But if they're interested enough to ask the question of what it means, than they should be entitled to that information and provided the resources to educate themselves. To some extent this question philosophically mirrors the same struggles that have gone on throughout history. Do you want a group of people that are told what to think and how to live their lives, or do you want a group of people that are free to think for themselves and decide how they want to live their lives. i guess I just get a little riled up when it is suggested that I, being a consumer, should not be given the full information because I am not smart enough to understand it or learn about it, and i'll just wind up confusing myself. i'm extremely grateful that there are sites like this where people can educate themselves and increase their knowledge.
