Hi , i am basically looking for a Diamond for the GF's engamenet ring , i seem to be favouring buying from bluenile at the moment , but Solomon borthers and USAcert kinda throw a spanners in the works , as i would like ideal cut diamond , Bluenile show there cuts as :-

Good , Very good and Signature Ideal.

Is Blueniles cut levels a industry standard ?

or for example is Signature ideal , the same as saying polish excellent , cut excellent ? or is it better ?!?!?

The one i like the look of is :-

GIA cert 0.45 carat , signature ideal cut , color E , clarity VS1 at around £773 before UK taxes of around 20 %

Also i am been thrown by the clarity characteristics quoted on GIA certs

For example the one on Bluenile , quotes :- crystal , needle , pinpoint ?
but another similar but VS1 GIA from another supplier quotes :- Chip as its clarity characteristics

Help please !!!!!

Blue Nile is a drop shipper. They have the diamond shipped to you by the wholesaler.

USA Certed appears to still have the same web site design that they were using back in 2004. lol Use the personal list link
http://www.usacerteddiamonds.com/cpa3.html and input your criteria. They seem to respond faster to phone calls, though.

Skip EGL certs for the present time. They are off maybe 2 or more grades in color & clarity (they overstate it.) Stick with AGS or GIA graded stones.

Clarity is graded face-down only. The inclusions listed first are the grade-setter. Then the others are listed perhaps in order of decreasing visual impact, but I'm not certain and would have to go look that up. "eyeclean" is defined various ways, and you need to work with the vendor to make sure that the stone will meet your personal standards for eyeclean, from what angle, and at what distance. That's important if you are buying from a drop shipper like Blue Nile.

Chips can set or lower the clarity grade if they are large enough.

Hi Thank you for your reply , using pricescope , how do i determine the cut of a dimaond for example ?

if i want a excellent cut , what on a GIA cert should i be looking at to confirm the cut is a excellent cut ?

which is most important , polish or symmertry

if i found a suitable priced ring with very good to excellent for polish and symmerty would that be a defining indicator of its cut ?

Here is one i have been looking at :-

Use the HCA tool to help evalute a diamond. Even an Ideal/Excellent cut diamond can have issues.

www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

There is a cheat sheet of ranges that help you to narrow down well cut stones. However, this will also knock
out some nice stones but it will help to get you started.

Depth 60-62%
Table 54-58%
Crown 34-45 degrees
Pavilion 40.6 - 41 degrees

From there you can request an idealscope image (if the vendor offers it) to check on the light return.

An easier way may be to post your budget and let PSers look for you.

Never mind the HCA tool. I just realized you are looking at Princess cut stones. Those are harder.

No numbers tell you what is a good cut. You will need good images, aset images and video of the stones to
help you.

www.jamesallen.com is a good place to look for princess cut.

Also, Whiteflash ACA princess cuts are pre-vetted with all the images that are need to determine whether its a nice
stone (basically they only pick nice stones).

www.whiteflash.com

If you want a well cut stone, you need to focus on how the crown angle works in concert with the pavilion angles. Polish and symmetry has less of an effect in the grand scheme of things and is not a indicator of its cut quality. This is why many do not recommend drop-shippers, as they do not provide ASET images for their diamonds (which shows you how and where your diamond is reflecting light or not reflecting light). If you want to take the guesswork out of it, stay with AGS0 stones because AGS has done the checking for you, hence a higher price.

Cut grades mean even less in Princess cut stones. There is no standard. Like Chrono said, if you stick with an AGS000 stone
that has been evaluated for light you will be in good shape or, you need to be able to see images of the stone and
be able to request aset images.

If you are set with shopping with blue Nile, add polish and symmetry to the filters and filter for ex/ideal. Then sort by one of them. If both are ideal, there is better chance it is a AGS0 stone. Also what is your budget ?

Hi Thank you all for your replys , my budget is around 1250 USD plus 20 % import duty when it arrives into the UK (free shipping)

I am happy to shop with the best price for the best Diamond in my range , Bluenile just seems a little less confusing to use , but i am more than open to suggestion , i just need a bit of hand holding to boost my confidence in making the right choice :)

on Bluenile , one that pops up that is ideal for my price range and size , ideally i would like .50 for a similar price , but i want the cut...

if you go onto Blue nile

and set the range to :-

Diamond :- Princess

Cut :- Signtature Ideal

Colour E to D

Clarity VS1 or better

The cheapest one pops up (773.00 in uk pounds) 1223 in USD

Can anyone offer me any advice on my post above please TYI

As mentioned earlier, nobody can tell you whether a GIA princess cut is well cut nor not by the numbers and Blue Nile will not provide any ASET. If you want to stay with BN, look for an AGS0 princess cut diamond because its light return is already proven with an ASET.

Thank you for your reply, I am a complete novice, so is AGSO and a ASET a different certificate provider to GIA? Or is it a a additional certificate?

I am happy to try a different supplier, but who would be best price wise and quality wise online please?

AGS0 refers to a certificate of Ideal by the American Gem Society Laboratories, the leading authority on diamond cut quality. GIA does not yet provide an overall cut grade on princess or any other fancy shape. ASET is the tool developed by AGS to graphically display important aspects of light performance. If you read the article I posted the link to you will learn all about both and it will help you in your search for a high performing princess cut.

Sorry for the lack of explanation. Just as GIA is a reputable lab that grades diamonds, AGS is another very reputable lab that grades diamonds. So basically, my recommendation is to look for a princess cut diamond with AGS paperwork rather than GIA paperwork. AGS0 is the highest cut grade assigned, meaning that it is cut for maximum light return aka sparkle. ASET is a tool used to measure the type and strength of light return.

Thank you both for your very informative replies, could you suggest which of the price scope search sellers will provide such certificates, I am assuming Bluenile do not as I have not seen options to search for ASET and AGSO, but I may of missed that.

Is it likely to increase price with either of those two certificates?

does GIA offer details of cut on regular round type diamonds?

GIA does provide an overall cut grade on rounds. The top grade of excellent is signifcantly broader than that of AGS Ideal, so it is advised that you also request ASET or Ideal Scope images to fully analyze those. Using the HCA tool is a good way to filter out some of the lower performing GIA Ex stones. AGS0 diamonds tend to be a bit more expensive than regular GIA Triple Ex. Princess cuts tend to be much less expensive than rounds, all 4 C's being equal.

Thank you once again, I kind of thought I was close to making a well informed purchase, but it looks as if more research is required, which is not a bad thing, best to be well informed.

I know you can't point me towards a price scope search engine supplier, but hopefully someone can quote a couple so I can nail down a price and a suitable supplier.

Thank you, the Lauren site looks to be out of my rather limited budget range, as I am only looking at spending around 1300 ish USD as I will have 20 percent import duties applied when it lands in the UK.

But please keep the recommendations coming please.

Ah my apologies, I looked at the Diamonds the site had on offer, I am not looking for a ring just a new diamond with ideal cut, hearts and arrows etc, so with the link I looked at the diamonds the site offered, thank you though.
