Why do GIA certificates have comments? (not in the diagram)

On many GIA certificates there are comments such as "additional clouds, pinpoints and surface graining are not shown."
My main question is, why are they not shown in the stone's diagram?

The purpose of the diagram is to indicate what it was that set the grade and to provide details that may be useful in identifying that particular diamond. If it doesn't fit one of those then it's just noise and extra noise makes the plot less useful.

Thank you for explaining it, but does that mean GIA comments are not visible in the actual stone? For example, with regards to purchasing online, I've been trying to find a VS2 stone without inclusions under the table. If the GIA comments are additional pinpoints and clouds are not shown in the diagram, how should I interpret that? Are they not visible to the naked eye?

No, it means that the items in the comments but not the plot were not the grade setting inclusions and, in the opinion of the plotter, they are not helpful in identifying the stone. 'Eye visible' is not part of the GIA standards.

That said, it's a seriously unusual VS2 or some fantastically good eyes to have an eye visible inclusion from the face up position.

Eye clean would depend on the shape and size of the diamond you intend to get. VS2 in smaller stones is typically more than enough for eye clean.
