Not as cheesy a question as it sounds.

I am a fairly level-headed fella, but I can stare for hours into a RBC diamond.

When I have cleaned my partner''s engagement ring for her in the sonic cleaner, I dry it off and I find myself gazing at it as it flashes in the light. I''ll just rotate it watching it flash.

As I said, I am a quite level headed person, and not prone to standing about with my mouth hanging open, but when looking at a diamond, I become quite "mesmerised".

I have discounted the theory that when I have spent so much money on something, I want to look at it constantly ;-) There is more to it than that. There is psychology involved, biological psychology.

Can anyone explain this to me please?

well, no one likes a gloomy day, do we? We like sunny days. Like plants, we too respond to light in a life affirming way. Perhaps it is the abundance of light and how the flashes can be repeated and varied that mesmerize us.

sort of like the cliche attractive person whose teeth sparkle, or someone whos eyes sparkle? That could be why (since the advent of Tolkowski's cut) the diamond has donned on the mesmerizing properties that we all know as "sparkle". Add to that the uniqueness of the physics of how it all works, and it's truly amazing.

Prisms used to be the biggest thing and most fun to experiment with in my science classes as a kid. Light is an intereting subject, and now imagine all that multiplies by 50+ facets!

I think because it's programmed into us, to love fire. We aren't that far removed from our earlier Homo ancestors, no matter what we would like to think.

There's something eerie about staring into the heart of fire...or the heart of a diamond.

It's called being "rockupied". I am also a victim to this phenomenon.

In my opinion, diamonds are hypnotic because they are unpredictable. You never know what colors will be produced if you turn it just slightly this way... or that way...

To me, it's like having my own personal rainbow on my finger.

My diamond makes me a little dizzy if I stare at it too long. I think it's just fixating on a small focal point for too long.

Maybe it is because every new look at a diamond can be totally unique.

Similar to my kid like fascination with kaleidoscopes.

If it sparkled exactly the same everytime, it might be boring.

Maybe because they represent eternity. The average diamond is between two and four billion years old and started as a mineral deep in the core of the earth. It's all so enchanting and in today's automated, computerized world....that's very appealing.

Now we're going to have to change all of that subliminal marketing text that we've been placing between the lines of all our posts here on PS... You know, all of that "now sit back and relax, close your eyes - no wait, don't close your eyes or you won't be able to read the script - um, relax, yes, that's right... as you read our words you will feel more and more relaxed, you are getting very relaxed, you are so relaxed that you want to buy a diamond, a big, bright, beautiful diamond with just the right proportions, not any diamond will do, it has to be Nice Ice (shhhh, Leonid, it's a hypnotic script) nothing else will do... More and more relaxed, more and more relaxed, you're feeling your retina's get warmer and warmer like their being burned out of your head by our bright sparkly diamonds... All is good, you feel great, in fact, you've never felt better! Now when you click back to the Rocky Talky Forum here on Price Scope, you're not going to remember any of this, you're just going to remember that you need to buy a diamond, it will be a wonderful obsession, you're going to need more and more of them and you'll never know why. Yes, that sounds about perfect. Now go ahead, click off of this page and return to the forum...

Diamonds hypnotic? You think?

must call niceice must buy diamond!
Do you accept monopoly money?

And not the Debeers or microsoft kind the real deal :}

Well... I already had the diamond desease at least half a decade before I saw the first add of any sort. So, at least for some people there is no need of marketing to do the trick

Just do't let the kids play with those

Simply put, IMHO, they are the single most smallest object of beauty. I have to remind myself to keep my eye on the road. Cell phone, no problem. Diamond staring - hazardous.
