Could someone please tell me how much should one expect to pay in whole sale price for platinum, per gram? Thanks!

Platinum is going for $1611/oz today, which comes to just over $49/gram for 950 plat. I’m not sure that figure is going to be very useful to you though. Most people posting here are interested in buying jewelry made of platinum instead of platinum bullion and the labor cost to make it into a ring is often more than the cost of the materials. How much the labor costs will depend on the details of the design, the manufacturing technique used, where both you and the workman are, the distribution route chosen and other details that are only loosely related to the weight. Instead of worrying about ‘wholesale’, whatever that means in this business, pay attention to the details of the particular item being offered to you.

Thanks! It looks like it ranges between $50 to $60 per gram.

$50-$60/gram for what?

I was calculating the whole sale price based the recent per ounce price for platinum.
The reason I am asking is that I have a heavy platinum ring (10 grams) which contains diamonds that I may want to remove to put in new stones. I am trying to figure out if it is worth the effort by finding out the "raw price" of the metal alone.

It’s likely that more will depend on the design and the way the stones are set than will depend on the cost of bulk platinum but I now understand the reason for your question. Sometimes that’s a relatively easy job and sometimes it’s quite a chore. Have you showed it to a jeweler to get an estimate on the work you want done?

Not yet! The band has tiny invisible set platinum diamonds of about 1ct total weight. I was hoping I can re-set it with french cut colored-stones or emerald cut diamonds in bigger size /per stone.

That sounds like a total remake but let us know after you’ve had a chance to talk to someone who can actually see the piece.

Is it because channel-set band is hard to re-set?

You’re changing the number, the shape, and size of the stones. Any one of those would be a big deal.

Platinum recycles just fine. Most good jewelers can either trade in the metal or refine it down and use it to make a new piece if that’s what’s required.

Thank you for providing me with a lot of things to think about. It sounds like the process is a lot more involved than I thought. Will definitely follow-up to let you know if it is worth the make-over. Thanks!
