Reading through the forums I gathered that whiteflash was one of the really good vendors. However I'm not sure if they are the choice only for their in house diamonds. With dealing with them, it seems the only stones available that meet my criteria are virtual stones. There is nothing avaialable in house. If this is the case should I still go with whiteflash? The setting would be a customized setting also so nothing that only whiteflash offers. Anyone with experience getting a virtual stone from whiteflash or what due diligence I should do in this circumstance?

I got my pear from there virtual selection, but I wouldn't recommend it now. They make you pay full price for the stone before they will pull it for you.

If you have to go custom anyways, I'd contact Engagement Rings Direct, see what they can find you.

hmm.. yea i read they changed their policy... So pretty much you have to pay a large amount upfront. However, if you know for sure you are going with them then it shouldn't be too too bad right? just that you need to put up a large 'deposit'. and if you don't like the stones you won't be charged to keep sending them back? (before you had to pay to ship them back each time?)
not sure if it's even possible to wait to see if they add any new in house stones? not sure the frequency of this

It's just too much of a hassle with the new policy so I would have other vendors call up the stone for me.

yeah its nice they used to charge you to send the stone back, but i mean, other places will pull a FEW stones for you to compare. Can you even do that with WF without paying for all the stones?

If they dont have the setting you want and they are just pulling stones they didnt cut, why do you want to go with them?

Also, what is the stone you are looking for?

One of the reasons I would go with one of these places that cut specialty stones is for the specialty cuts and the upgrade policies that go with them. So if you are looking at something that is not in house, I'd honestly look elsewhere. You would then be paying to buy a stone from them that they didn't cut and wouldn't be part of an upgrade policy so the main benefits of buying there are gone.

You could check one of the other vendors and/or post specs here and see what comes up.

Most of the stones are in NYC and it is silly to have a Houston jeweler calling in stones when there are plenty of jewelers in NY who can go pick up the stones. I had Good Old Gold call in one last year because they do such a great job checking out the stone's light performance, etc. Then have the stone sent to Steven Kirsch or ERD to do your setting!

Let me say that I love WF and have bought diamonds there, but I buy there because the diamonds they have cut for their in-house inventory are top cut quality!

I agree that's its too big a hassle. It's wise to compare a few stones, but now that whiteflash requires full payment for each virtual stone brought it, I would only consider their in house selection. If you would really like to work with them though, you could call and inquire about their selection, its possible they know of additional inventory that hasn't yet been added to the system.

unless there is a specific reason to why you must get the diamond from whiteflash, it would be wise to consider all the other vendors who might have a stone in house. Have you looked at vendors like James Allen or Brian Gavin yet?

thanks for the feedback... this whole selection process is very complex lol

i am looking for a princess cut, .9ct-1ct, but the selection at whiteflash isn't that large. i was budgeting around $3.5k-4.5k, which i know is a bit tight. The person I'm dealing with at whiteflash has been very helpful thus far, and when inquiring with james allen i didn't feel that same level of customer service, even though it seems they have a better selection.
i don't know if i should wait and keep checking to see if anything new pops up in-house, or just go somewhere else...

They are both nice, the WF one has a smaller table, the gog one looks more square.

My deciding factor would be price. That WF one is a 1k more expensive and you're paying for clarity you won't really see.

hmm...

so in the end, i know i am looking for 1ct, but it is feasible to get a .9ct that looks exactly like a 1ct, but at a cheaper price? I would only be getting a 1ct just for the sake of saying it is 1ct, even though there is absolutely no difference when viewing?

To me buying a. 9 ct is a good deal. Prices increase when you hut that 1 ct mark, for the same reason you want a one ct, so does everyone else. The difference would one noticeable side by side, but on the hand Itll have just about the same amt of presents. Plus, if you wanted to add a halo or side stones, that would add a lot more presents to the overall look of the ring vs a slight increase in ct size of the center stone, and saving the money by getting a stone right under 1ct allows more money towards the setting for exactly that.
