It's not doing anything for me but is it doing anything for YOU? It's sweet outside the setting so perhaps a white metal is not the best choice for the spinel.

I do see the slight greyish/lavenderish color now...

I agree with Chrono: "do YOU like it".

My initial thought was..does it fit the setting? I am nowhere near any expert on jewelry! But it looks like there's too much space between the stone and the halo. But I could be way, way off and probably am.

Hows the cut? Is it a step-cut? Hard to tell from pics. If its a step cut, you know what I am going to say next. That stone would be a lot more brilliant and dispersive if the pavillion was re worked into a brilliant-style. But thats what I always say. LOL.

I just don't know about THAT stone in THAT ring. Stone has potential and beauty, I just dont know about if it should go there.....

Just my 2 cents...

I think it's beautiful! That's the perfect setting for the stone, but then again, I love halos.

Wear it in good health!

Beautiful stone and I like the setting as well. It is hard to photograph a ring you are wearing and I suspect that is why the spinel looks less "crisp" in the hand shots. I think you did very well.

Looking at the first set of pictures, I thought: "YES!", but then the second set made me hesitate for some reason - it might be the half/half thing going on in some of the pics. Overall, though, it looks like a good fit and a nice stone. I echo the question: what do you think?

I think it is a cute fat pear. It has the bow tie that is common to the cut. But, I love the pale pink color...makes it look like sort of like the pink diamond ring that I'm never going to own.

Does it have any dispersion? Is it fun to look at?

AAARRGGHH! It doesn't fit! Took it to my jeweler today :nono:

ARGH! I thought this would be "the one"! Wow - this setting is quite the challenge, isn't it??? Is there a favourite from the options you've seen to date, in terms of colour or shape or ??? anything else?? You have a lot of beautiful options that you've tried. What makes you the happiest in this setting??

It would fit, but would sit low. Perhaps your jeweler just doesn't want to set it because it would sit lower. He may also need to add a couple of extra prongs for added security because it is probably slightly too small for the setting.

These lighter spinels don't photograph that well. I bet it's prettier and more sparkly in person.

Thanks all - yes this ring has been quite the challenge! :errrr:
No - I have not had a "favorite" stone yet. But this one was the closest. The only thing that prevented it is that its not that COLOR I've been looking for from the beginning. But I'm odd like that - that's the reason I like the "white" spinel so much. Because to "most" people its uncommon - they don't know what it is. I like the touch of color. At least to my colorblind eye. At first glance it looks like a white stone. But then when you look closer you can see the flashes of color. To me its a very interesting stone. And while its not the bold color I was originally looking for, I do think it looks nice in the ring.
We haven't had any sun here since I got the stone. And when I went to the jeweler yesterday I had the kiddo with me so my attention was elsewhere. I really didn't spend any time looking at it in the store. And I swear EVERY room in my house is CFL (when did we do that?) But even in my house the stone's got sparkle. I'm just looking forward to looking at it in some other light to see what its like.
I took it to the store I've been using. They seem to have two bench guys. So I when I go back to pick up my OTHER project they are setting :naughty: I'll see if I can ask the other bench guy what he thinks. He's usually more interested in what you've brought in and in trying to make it work. <fingers crossed>

I think it is not totally white. Just very pale pinkish/lilac-ish. I understand how you feel. I have a very pale spinel from Tan, and it is so clear, it sparkles like crazy. Perhaps it attracted you in your stone, too?

Yes, it is very very pale purple. You are correct - it is the clear sparkle that attracts me.

So are you keeping the stone anyway?

I really like the stone! I like the sparkle in it and the very soft soft lavender hue to it. Maybe its suited for a different setting tho - a RG or a YG one perhaps? It is a very appealling pear shape - I hope you can find a home in your jewelry box for it!

I'm tempted to keep it but I will probably send it back. How many pear stone rings can a girl have?
I have a pear chryso that I bought for this setting that I didn't like in the white metal. But I want to mount it. So unless this spinel would play nice with the chryso in a bypass sort of ring - I'll probably send it back.....

Pendant perhaps? Having two 11 x 8 mm stones in a bypass ring is pretty big unless you have man hands.

um... I don't think I saw that page in the rule book, that says you can only own 1 pear ring!!! :Up_to_something: So, you have special permission from me to keep & set it and break that "1 pear" rule!!

It is really lovely and a shame to send it back if you like the stone for its own merits. A halo pendant would be amazing - good idea, Chrono!

Hi. I like that stone too and I hope you keep it for something else. I was playing with my photo program again, and it may be that a more dynamic color is needed for that setting and your skin tone. Here are a couple I came up with. My fav for that setting is the amethyst.

OMG JJ!! How did you do that??!! Thank you thank you !!!! :appl: :appl:

What is the green? I like it but <I can't believe I'm saying this> I think I LOVE the ammy! A looonngg time ago Chrono suggested amethyst to me. And I considered it. But I kept on being nagged with feelings like amethyst was "common" and I wanted something more "special" for this mounting. But they look stunning together!! And have that exact OMG look I wanted all along.

Hi ya! The top green is actually my tsavorite stone which I've already set, and the second green stone is a paler photo of an emerald.

I LOVE LOVE the amy. I don't find them common. What you need to do is get a really GEM QUALITY amethyst. You really should be able to find one in your size with a little looking and maybe emailing some of the vendors/stone cutters recommended here. I would probably guess, and I could be wrong, that the gem I used in the photo is African material. And I think that tone/color looks absolutely FABULOUS with your skin tone! :appl:

The amethyst really pops in that setting and your hand. Can I insert the dreaded "I told you so" here?

Yes, amethyst is a common stone but not all amethysts are of equal quality. Cheapo pale or plain purple Brazilian ones seem ordinary. If you want something special, take a look at the African material. Better yet, see if you can snag a Jackson Crossroad amethyst with drool worthy blue flash.

:D

I am with Chrono and JJ on this - that amethyst really POPPED out of the screen - I think we have to give it to Chrono for calling it right from the start - awesome!! That's def the route I'd be persuing at this point. That really makes a statement.

Ok, I'll forgive you for returning that lavender spinel... but if you want to consider selling it on LT or DB, i'm pretty confident it could be snapped up, FWIW.

I'll blame it on my newbie-ness  You are ALL correct and I deserve all the "I told you so's"!!

I have tried the JXR route - no luck.

Thank you all for your patience with me :D And thank you JJ! Those pics were exactly the inspiration I needed! I seem to not have the ability to visualize how something is going to look in the mounting AND on my hand at the same time. Your photos are really what I needed!

Now HOW in the heck am I going to find that AMMY!!! I've emailed Jerry to see if he has any similar rough....

You know Enerchi - I think I will do just that! I'm not finding the inspiration I need to keep it but it IS pretty. I think I will put it up and give someone else a chance to love this one. Thanks!!

JBK, I'm the same way..can't visualize. That's why I learned how to play with the pictures of the stones and settings. It helps me a lot. Just hope you can find something as gorgeous as the picture I found. Don't give up now. Keep us up to date will ya!

Who have you approached about the JXR ammys? Doesn't George Ellis deal with these?
