Hi -

I am getting a completely custom made setting with micropave around the diamond and all in the band. I was quoted the price of $5K for platinum and $4K for white gold. My overall budget is $16K. I am wondering if I should put $12K into the stone I want and get a little more cts. (holding all over aspects the same -clarity,color,cut,etc) or stick to $11K and give a lil ct and go with platinum. Thoughts? Thanks.

If you are getting micro pave, no questions, platinum.

With an expensive ring, I would definitely go for the platinum. It''s has a better feel to it, it doesn''t yellow, and just *feels* better. I wouldn''t put a 16k ring in white gold since you want the overall ring to feel high quality.

I have to disagree with Snow and KC. I'd put the extra money toward the diamond and go with white gold. Of course I've had really good luck with white gold and pave. My three stone ring is 18 kt. white gold with 3-sided micropave on the shank. I've worn it daily for going on three years now and I've put it in an ultrasonic cleaner on a weekly basis and I have never lost a stone. It also still looks brand new. Now I know some people have issues with their white gold turning yellow, but this has not been a problem for me and with the pave you don't see that much of the white gold anyway.

I''d go with platinum. I just like it better and WG does yellow on me. For the 1K difference in price, I think the plat. is worth it.

Well, I personally prefer white gold. I like the life that my white gold pave band has, as compared to my friend who has almost the same band in platinum. Hers is gray and looks more like a heavy, dull utility metal, to me. But that''s just my personal opinion and I understand that many people don''t agree with me. But I do suppose that if I prefered platinum over white gold in the first place, and I had $16k to put toward an ering, I''d probably go for the platinum.

To me, one metal isn''t any better than the other - it''s really just what''s "in favor," and platinum happens to be in favor at the moment. Good luck with your choice!

For the price you''re looking to spend, I''d go with platinum, but like tberube mentioned, it will have a gray cast, which many people do like and many others do not.

I prefer white gold, it stays shiny and new looking as opposed to platinum.
I thought I would try platinum this time around but my jeweler knows I like shiny things

and steered me towards a white gold band w/ plat prongs.
I''ve had the same white gold ring for 9 yrs and it''s still completely white.

...platinum. Hers is gray and looks more like a heavy, dull utility metal, to me.

Doesn't it depend on the setting style, can someone (non-pro) tell white gold from platinum just by looking at it?

I just bought a traditional Tacori, and can agree to some extent that it looks more like a utility metal, but that look totally adds to the old school charm. I was originally looking at the same type of setting in white gold, but from memory, it seemed like it had the same look.

I think you need to ask her what she prefers! I agree with RingaBling and the few others that say WG. I have a platinum band that I kinda hate because its dull and dingy, where as white gold just glitters and shines forever ;) Also to me, I''d rather have an extra thousand in the stone, not in the metal, but thats just me.

Would rhodium plating platinum once a year keep it from forming the patina?

i also prefer the look of WG. I understand 18K WG will be whiter than 14K. Is this an option for you?

BTW - will 18K be strong enough for a ring setting?

I asked a similar question and was referred to these links, which have alot of good information in them. I''ll pass them along...

The short & sweet version is it''s a PERSONAL DECISION. Both have cons/pros to them. Most that buy platinum do so because it''s heavier and feels better to them, and also because white gold tends to yellow on them. While white gold has a tendancy to yellow, the rate will vary from person to person based on their exact chemical composure. Those that go white gold tend to like the shiny brilliance of the white gold and don''t have the yellowing problem as bad as others, or choose to have the ring re-plated as necessary to keep it shiny and white. Also they do not like how the platinum scratches (and dulls) rather easily and quickly.

Does your lady have any other pieces in white gold and/or platinum? Does SHE have a preference? If she has white gold, has it yellowed on her?

In my previous marriage, both myself and my ex-wife had white gold rings. Hers stayed more "white" however mine yellowed very quickly. I''m not sure if it was because of my chemical composure or the fact I was not gentle on the ring as it had lots of surface character (scratches). For this reason, I would never want white gold for MYSELF; however, I do prefer the shiny aspect of it over platinum. While it''s not a good choice for me, I like white gold for someone else if they can wear it without it yellowing on them like it did on me.

Lastly, when reading those articles I linked, look for the ones where people used palladium in the white gold to help keep it white. Also there was someone who used a special alloy mix on the platinum to keep it shiny and from dulling so quickly. So it appears there are some options. But in the end, if you really like the white gold, you can always take it in to get it re-plated. The frequency will vary but it may not be a bad deal for you. I would think $1,000 would get alot of re-plating done.

Good luck!!!

As the proud owner of a large ering that is in white gold, I would recommend whatever would suit your lifestyle best.

I am a hairstylist...so working with my hands each and everyday, WG would "wear" better. So, consider your job, activities, and overall way of life...and then proceed.
