From info that I read on internet, platinum prongs are safer and more pliable when they are snagged and not as easy to wear off over time as white gold prongs. White gold prongs are stronger but not as pliable.

I see many people mounting large stones in yellow gold prongs.

Is it safe to mount a large stone in white gold prongs or is it safer to mount in platinum prongs?

It is safer to use platinum for holding diamonds. It grips better than white gold and holds its shape better as it is generally made less springy. In other words, platinum generally stays put. Yellow gold is great for certain prong applications, but platinum is better than yellow or white gold in most configurations.

Remember, the alloying process controls a lot of the characteristics of the finished metal. You can make gold and platinum, as used in jewelry, quite different by changing the chemistry.
