White or yellow gold is a personal preference.

Sometimes its advised to use yellow gold if
you purchase a diamond with a tinted color.

It is also sometimes advised to use white gold
or platinum for diamonds with a very good color.

The trend seems to me that more people are looking at white gold and platinum rings. Find out what what your girlfriend likes and pick that one

Going with platinum myself, for an E colored stone. Gotta show off that icy white beauty

I agree with Lugus 100%. Find out what your girl likes, then shop accordingly. I noticed the heavy emphasis on the currently-trendy platinum settings during my search, but knew ahead of time that my sweetie was a yellow gold woman, so I made sure to get a yellow gold setting (with platinum prongs for durability). It was definitely the way to go for me. Maybe you should ask her, or just take stock of what types of jewelry she wears regularly for an idea of what color she'd like.
