Dear PSers,

Would love your advice on whether I should choose 14K WG or platinum for this pendant I'm getting my mom as a surprise (thanks tyty333 for her enormous help in getting me to arrive at this design!):

It's a .91ct center pear diamond (from GOG), with .05ct bezel stone and .01ct melee.

I don't know if she has a nickel allergy (most of her jewelry is yellow gold, with some platinum and sterling silver), although she has very sensitive skin which reacts badly to harsh chemicals (on occasion requiring steroid injections). The chain length I'm thinking of is 18 inches, so the pendant might rest on bare skin or fabric depending on the situation.

Apart from the allergenic properties of 14K WG, would WG or platinum be more durable/ look better in the long run, in particular for a halo pendant like this, in your opinion? The price difference is about $400.

Both are good choices but since the price difference is only $400 and she is sensitive to chemicals, I would play it safe and stick with PT.

Personally, I'd go platinum. Just a personal preference. Pretty setting btw!!

For $400, I would also go platinum.

Love the design, looking forward to pictures when it's done!

Thanks everyone!!

Will be wiring the funds to GOG soon - exciting!

I voted for 14K WG, as a pendant is not going to get bashed about as much as a ring, and it is cheaper (400 USD is enough for a ring setting for me), and one cannot really tell the difference from afar.

However, if there are concerns with regard to potential metal allergies, then platinum would be a safer bet.

DK :))

Thanks dk168!

Even though $400 really isn't that much in the overall scheme of things + lifespan of the pendant (for those of us fortunate enough to indulge a little), a few hundred here and there add up pretty quick!

But I've finally decided on platinum (after a lot of agonizing - I just couldn't seem to make up my mind!) - just to be on the safe side re: allergies. And given that the center stone is a low color (J), maybe the white of rhodium plating would show up the warmth a little too much?

I had decided on 18 inches for the chain at first. But my mom is petite (5' 1"), so I'm actually leaning towards 16 inches now.

I'm a bit shorter than your mother & I prefer 18" chains because it's a more versatile length imo, works with a greater variety of necklines. Plus, as I've gotten older, my neck is not one of my best features, so I'd rather draw attention away from it ;))

The pendant design is lovely, your mother is going to be bowled over by your thoughtfulness!

Thanks MollyMalone - and I'm sure necklaces of ANY length look lovely on you!

I might ask GOG about a necklace extender or adjustable jump ring - though I have some concerns about durability and overall aesthetics.

I put jump rings on the longer necklace so I can wear them at different lengths depending on my neckline for the day. They
make necklaces very versatile.

Looking forward to seeing the finished necklace. This will certainly be a gift for her to treasure!

You're so sweet, azeusa. fwiw, jump rings seem less visually intrusive to me than any necklace extenders I've seen. My local guy has engraved jump rings for me, so they look like more of a design element than an improvising add-on -- or so I like to think :)

I've bezeled a J coloured OEC in platinum and think it makes the diamond look whiter.

Thanks MollyMalone & Chrono!

Have just effected the wire transfer - waiting to hear back from GOG - I've paid for the platinum, so that's set! And will definitely ask about the jump ring - and if it can be engraved :), because that really does sound like it would look fantastic.
