Hi all,

So I''ve been looking for a long time now to find an engagement ring for my (hopefully!) wife-to-be. I''ve decided on the design and setting, but need to make my final decision on the diamond. I''ve got to choose between the following diamonds and hoped that someone might be able to help me make a call on this...

.35
D Colour
VS1
$6,050

.38
E Colour
VS1
$6,300

.40
G colour
VS1
$5,900

I think that all of these diamonds are nice and good quality (the ring is coming from Cartier) but I''m struggling to make the final decision - I seem to be tying myself in knots over whether colour is more important than clarity, or vice versa.

Any help would be really needed!

Hi CiL

Are these diamonds all from Cartier? Really you could consider G and H colour and VS clarity comfortably if the all important cut quality is great and still have a very white and beautiful diamond. Do you have the basic proportions of these diamonds please such as;

depth%
table%
crown and pavilion angles
girdle thickness
diameter in MM
star and lower girdle facet percentages.

If these are from Cartier I don''t know if they do their own grading or use labs such as GIA, if GIA graded the above info will be on the reports.

assuming the stones in question are round. :p

other shapes, can''t really tell much from numbers.

It''s going to be from the Cartier Solitaire 1895 range but the diamond is actually emerald cut (with smaller diamonds down the arms of the ring). The diamond is certified by GIA. I''m afraid this is the only information they''ve emailed me yet.

tough, no way to tell from the numbers the cut performance.

Ok if these are EC's there isn't much info we can get just by numbers unfortunately, it will have to come down to your eyes as Cartier will not supply images we need such as ASET or detailed photographs. Alternatively you could purchase an ASET scope to get a better idea if you would be comfortable using one in such a store. They are easy to use and the results straightforward to interpret with a little study.

I''ve seen so little difference in the white white colors that if I''m looking at a stone, if it talks to me and the price is right for me, I love it. It''s very easy to get bogged with the details and forget what the eye is telling you. This is just my opinion though.
