I am sure this is subjective but in your experience or your opinion, do you think a shape looks bigger? I keep reading that marquis (sp?), pear and round look big, but I want your opinions and not some article I've read online... You guys have awesome insight and in my experience I haven't found that round looks big, actually I think it looks small? But I am a newbie so forgive me, I don't speak diamond talk very well.. : )

RB's have a better spread than say cushions and asschers since the latter tend to be deeper.

Pears and ovals definitely have a better spread than RB's.

I would try some on to see what shape you like best on your hand.

I find that pears look the largest on me.

IMHO marquise looks largest for the weight followed by pears, especially long skinny shallow ones but watch out for windowing.

A diamond coming to a sharp point gives a lot of length for very little weight.

My 1.00 ct oval is 7.99 x 6.12. Compare that to a 1.00 ideal-cut RB that is 6.5 in diameter. My stone is lovely, has virtually no bow tie, and I get compliments on it nearly every day. Despite the fact I have size 9 fingers, the stone looks big on my hand. I love it... I saw a lot of ugly ovals when I was looking for my stone, so you have to be kind of picky and persistent, but for me it was worth it.
My brother just got engaged as well, and his fiancee's stone is a 1.07 ct RB. It is a gorgeous gorgeous diamond, and she has size 3.75 fingers so it looks really lovely on her, but if you put my diamond next to hers, mine looks nearly twice as big. They're both beautiful, just different.

suroweave aren't you shopping in the 5+ carat range? they will ALL look large...so I would just focus on what appeals the most to you :)

Marquise look biggest, but you have to not mind that they are not in style at the moment. You have to watch for too much bowtie also. But on the flip side, well cut marquises are very sparkly, they are almost as sparkly as rounds.
I have a marquise ring with a 1.19 carat stone and it literally looks 2x as large as my .91 carat earring, not just 30 points bigger. The mm measurements show that this is not my imagination. it is because marquises are much flatter so all the diamond is on top where you can see it (so to speak) not hiding under the girdle as it can be with other cuts.
I think pear and oval are the next biggest looking for the carat weight. Princesses are generally smaller for the weight than rounds (a 1 carat princess is about the size of .80 round) but asschers are I think the smallest looking for the weight. But of course the apparent size isn't the only reason people pick a certain shape of diamond, it's wisest to go with what you prefer (and what looks good on your hand).
Rounds look good on everybody and are by far the easiest to find a nice one but many prefer other shapes, at least on Pricescope.

agreed. While you may be able to afford a larger marquis than a RB- you may not end up really liking a marquis. I would tend to go towards the biggest you can afford in your favorite cut.
