My fiance has bought me my dream asscher :appl: and now we're off to find a setting. Because this stone is at the top of our budget, we're trying to economize with the setting.

The first option is the solitaire, hand-forged in 18ct wg and offered by GOG, where we're getting the stone. The second is from Leigh Jay Nacht, and would be in 14ct wg. Then there's a third option which is a twist on the second, which would be the same setting, but set with baguettes. We need help deciding! What do you all think? The LJN setting would be a few hundred under the GOG setting, not enough to be determinative.

I don't know the size of the diamond in the GOG solitaire picture, but the one in the LJN setting is about 5.5, so a bit smaller than my 6.4ish stone.

Option#1:

Option#2:

Option#3: (only the side view was available, but it's #2 with baguettes)

call me simple but I like the GOG settting

I like a combo of #2 and #1. I like a plain squared off shank like #2, meaning #2 w/o side stones. I like without sidestones, but the squared off shank seems to match the square look of the asscher better. just me.

Hmm thanks. Now you've given me food for thought. I'm also thinking that as I'm not really getting a "dream" setting either way at this time, it would be lovely to find something in stock I could have quickly. :naughty:

Love asschers! They give me a modern classic feel! I always day dream about having one set with trillion or baguette side stones

I voted simple GOG solitaire. An Asscher is SO incredibly beautiful - I would want to let it speak for itself for a while.

Something with this feel? Saved in my asscher setting file, possibly somebody on PS should get credit for it but sorry I don't know who!

I hear you, and that's where we're leaning right now and I'm mulling over LLJsmom's comment too.

Here's a handshot of my diamond plopped in a random setting:

Have you looked at Beverley K? They have beautiful settings that would be nice for an asscher. I personally at the moment have a plain solitaire setting for my AVR, but certainly it will be more perfect in an antique style setting, if I can ever decide on one! I feel the same way about an asscher. I do not think the quality is good enough on setting #2. But if I were going to do a plain solitaire, I'd want a temporary, inexpensive one (like the one your stone is sitting in) so that I could later change it to something like BK or Singlestone or have a custom one made like the one above with the side baguettes and shields or like #3 (made by Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch).

Just the kind of input I needed. Thank you. ETA: thanks for the Beverly K suggestion, I'll check it out.

ah its hard. because part of me loves a solitaire, and part of me loves step cuts paired wth baguettes. are you happy with the finger coverage you get from the simple solitaire? I know asshers face up smaller. Will you be content with it alone?

Beautiful diamond! I also love LJN but GOG has never worked with them before which would make me a little nervous. I would suggest looking at Bev K through GOG. I'm not a huge fan of plain solitaires (I say "plain" because technically I have a solitaire but I have a lot of filigree work).

I was originally going to get an AVR from GOG with a vintage type setting from Bev K or Gabriel & Co. My plan was different than my husband's...he bought me a vintage ring from Jewels by Erica Grace. However, when we were working with GOG they were awesome.

I say get a setting from GOG but not the solitaire! Bev K website sucks, so here is where I used to go to get good pics of Bev K settings:

http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/shop/designers/beverley-k/products/beverley-k-baguette-and-round-diamond-engagement-ring

Also, if you show GOG the settings you like at LJN they may be able to suggest something similar.

Do you have side views of the GOG setting? I find it is very important for step cuts to be kept clean at all times for maximum sparkle so I would want a setting that is more open to make it easier for me to keep it clean. I am also not crazy about the quality of Setting 2 and 3.

Re finger coverage - Niel, I *think* so. I haven't seen it yet! But part of the problem with a 1.6 OEC I was considering earlier, that I really did love (and until we found this asscher it was continuing to tug at my heart after I sent it back), is that it felt too big for our lifestyle. So going with an asscher is making us both happy, and part of that reason is the smaller face-up size. That said, if I do an inexpensive solitaire now and wear it around for a bit, I can always upgrade to something fancier later on down the line for an anniversary or whatever.

Mandasand thank you! I am really excited about it. That second Beverly K suggestion is lovely, too.

Yes. I would be making the part under the basket (the gallery?) a regular shape so as not to copy lunemo's special tweak of making it an octagon. I think the rest of the design is fairly standard.

In that case, I would go with GOG's setting (clean, timeless and elegant) and look forward to receiving the dream setting on a future anniversary.

I rarely see asscher's and when I do, I'm blown away especially when they're in a solitaire setting. My vote is to keep it simple and beautifulf for the time being. This way you can really get a feel for how it fits into your lifestyle/how it looks on your finger and then decide whether you want to enhance the setting with sidestones, etc. Can't wait to see the finished product!

solitaire ER with baguettes for the wedding band.

Okay, currently on my "watch list" on ebay is just such a band in platinum. Now of course I can't, I don't think, mix platinum with 18k wg. BUT ... what if I do the setting for my asscher in rose gold (which is actually the ring that GOG has done in the past and is pictured here) with a platinum wedding band with baguettes?

ETA: And, would it look okay to have a flat wedding band with a rounded solitaire setting band?

This is the extent of my skills to show them together:

LOVE!

the only thing that i would personally do is also get a plain, or twisted, or engraved (but still sans diamonds ) wedding band in the same rose gold. rose gold on either side with that plat band sandwiched betwixt, yum

As long as the head of the ring was in platinum, then yes to the rose gold on the shank (band) and wearing with baguette wedding band.

Thanks for the feedback Niel and Chrono!

DS, they didn't mention anything about the head being in platinum if I do 18k wg. Should it be? Or are you just saying to make it platinum (vs. wg) to match the wedding band if I do this proposed combo where the wedding band will be platinum?

+1 your Asscher will look stunning with the elegant GOG solitaire!
I would either choose a full platinum version or a RG shank with platinum head.

:)

We've decided on the GOG solitaire in 18k rose gold and platinum head. Big decision for me to go with that metal, but I think it's just a lovely hue and will really make the diamond pop. Also, I've ordered the platinum baguette wedding band so it will make for an interesting combo.

Motownmama, I hope you read this so you see my thank you - thank you! - for putting the idea in my head for the band. Not to mention everyone else who helped so much, I really appreciate the input and voting. It's funny to think of all the rings and diamonds I almost got along the way.

Now the 3-week wait begins.

I am excited you have decided and think it will be a gorgeous set! I said platinum for the head because gold is brittle and more likely to break. Also the tips of gold prongs will wear away over time and you will have to have them retipped or even have to have a new head made. Platinum should last a lifetime, plus!

Thanks so much DS! I'm really excited about the diamond and the setting. Here's my asscher comparison video. It's been a long journey. Those folks at GOG have a LOT of patience.
