I''m wondering what people''s opinions are on settings that enhance a round brilliant stone''s "roundness".

What setting types are best to keep the round stone looking round?

I find that bezel sets are too busy and I dont'' like that you can''t see the stone from the side.

I find that four prong settings sometimes make a round stone look square-ish.

I find that six prong settings make a round stone look busy.

I''m looking for a solitaire setting OR something similar to WF''s "Harmony" or "3-Row Domed micro pave". I know a solitaire vs. a pave band....very different looks, but I haven''t decided yet. I used to think the pave type, similar to Michael B''s Princess ring. But now I think I''ll have more options for the wedding ring if I go with a solitaire.

Anyway for now I''m looking for advice on how to keep a 1 carat round brilliant stone looking, well, round

Thanks.

An 8 or 10 prong with really small, delicate prongs?

Well since I find the 6 prong a bit busy looking, the 8 or 10 prong idea would be out of the question.

lucyandroger: thanks for posting those links. elle''s bezel set stone is gorgeous. I do like how you can see the profile of the stone from the side view. But i''m really not crazy about the look of the half bezel. From the top, the half bezel has a rough/sharp/choppy look bc of the nature of the design. If anything I prefer a full bezel for continuity.

I find that the bezel settings seem to hide the edge (girdle?) of the ring, and make the stone seem as if its bound instead of being set "free" like with prongs (didn''t know how else to explain it without talking about the stone as if its a person, lol). Does this make any sense?

So is it just me or do 4 prong settings make round stones look square?

hmmmm...I can''t think of any other possible ways to set a stone if you don''t like the bezel look or the prong look. Have you actually seen any of these styles in person? From my experiece, prongs and bezels look much bigger and more noticeable in pictures than they do in real life.

I understand what you''re saying about bezels. Have you seen James Meyer''s? Here''s Coati''s JM: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/james-meyer-bezel-reset-has-arrived.97999/. It has an open profile.

ETA - I do agree with you that four prongs can sometimes give round stones a cushiony shape. It''s a personal preference thing.

You''ve pretty much eliminated all your options...

Thanks for posting my ring, L&R.

Puravida- the only other option i can think of is a tension setting. But those would probably be too bulky for your taste.
Have you seen Leon Mege's prongs? they're sooo small. In no way do they make a stone look square or busy.

Thanks for the additional replies. I''m not completely writing off the 4 or 6 prong options, I just wanted to get people''s opinions. Obviously personal taste plays a big part and they only way I''m gonna know for sure is to try on a tonne of rings :)

WOW, Coati''s ring is a stunner!!!

I just saw the thread for Lynn B''s BGD reset and wow, I was seriously speechless for a few moments. My BF and I were completely taken by surprise bc a) the reset is soooo GD gorgeous and b) Lynn B''s old fishtail pave set was the one I loved the most on PS about a year ago, prior to having to put my search for a ring on hold. I even talked to my local jeweler (unsuccessfully) about making a replica of it.

Ironically enough, over the past year, my taste has changed and I now seem to prefer solitaires. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the thread showcasing Lynn B''s new SOLITAIRE!!! Unbelievable! Now that I''m looking for inspiration for a solitaire E-ring, I come across her new setting and love it even more that then old one. I don''t even remember BGD from over a year ago. But now I''m seeing all these posts with his gorgeous rings. Exciting!

When I see rings like Leon Mege''s or the BGD''s I''m not bothered at all by the look of the four prongs. I need to pursue this further.....And I love the dainty claw-like tips on the prongs of the Mege and BGD rings.

Are there any other PSers rings I should check out? Similar to Lynn B''s?
