I had to work my butt off in December to close a deal by year end, which meant working every weekend including the two holiday weekends. Back in November, I knew how bad the end of the year would be, so I bribed myself that I could finally buy the RB solitaire pendant I have been wanting for several years with some of the bonus money. Now that it is time to buy, I am torn between two options.

While I was Christmas shopping, I went to Tiffany & Co. for the first time (shocking, I know) and tried on different styles. I tried on a .93 ct solitaire in a floating basket (no bail) that is similar to the WF four corners pendant. I thought it was stunning, and the size looked very nice (I wouldn’t mind going larger, but prefer to stay under 1 ct if possible because of the price jump). I also tried on a .92 ct pendant with the thin bezel, and it looked noticeably larger than the stone in the basket setting. The .92 in the bezel looked great (bigger than 1 carat), but I thought I might be able to go a little smaller with that setting. The next closest size down they had was .66, which was too small for me, but I thought .75-.85 might look really good (I just wish I could actually try one on).

I am torn, because I did slightly prefer the look of the basket setting, although I like both looks. (The basket looks more classic/timeless and the bezel more cool & modern – unfortunately, ever buying two different pendants this size so I can have both is not something I could justify to DH or myself.) I could get the same “1 carat” appearance for less money with the thin bezel and have $ left over for another project. Also, I have been craving a WF DBTY necklace for a while thanks to the enablers around here. I tried on the bezel solitaire and DBTY together at Tiffany (I held the DBTY down a little like it was a 19” necklace), and I loved the look of the 2 layered together. So, I could buy a 0.9-1.05 basket-set solitaire now since I like it a little better, and wait and buy a DBTY later, but then I would lose the cute layering option. Because of the cost of settings, I do not want to upgrade the diamond or change solitaire settings later.

So, which would you choose?

Argh! I was trying to do a poll and screwed it up.

Here are the two choices:

1.) 0.90-1.05 ct diamond (ACA or ES) set in Whiteflash Four Corners basket pendant http://www.whiteflash.com/Fine-jewelry/Pendants/-Four-Corners--Pendant--SETTING-ONLY_1028.htm
2.) 0.75-0.85 ct diamond set by WF in a very thin Tiffany-style bezel plus a WF DBTY necklace with five 0.17 ct ACAs (This option may cost a bit more, up to $1,000 depending on the stones available, but it is doable.)

I like both the 4 Corners and the bezel set! Either would be very pretty. I think I might prefer the bezel a bit more and I love the DBTY! So, I would go with Option 2. I really like versatility, soooo if you look at it from that perspective, Option 2 gives you 3 looks: bezel by itself, DBTY by itself, and bezel + DBTY.

Hee, hee -- I''ve definitely given that scenario some consideration. I wish I didn''t like both settings so much. I''ve tried to explain my dilemma to DH, but he just rolls his eyes.

I love the versatility of option 2. For that reason, that''s my pick. FWIW, tell hubby he wouldn''t want his eyes to freeze in that position.
