I''m new at this, and i''m looking for an EC diamond. Diamond 1 or diamond 2

What do you think? I''m trying to stay under 3K for the diamond, is this a good buy?

I don''t know much about Emerald Cuts, but I can point you to some info:

AGA grading chart

Simply select Emerald at the top of that page to see the chart.

Also there is some info here on shopping for fancy cuts. It''s pretty long, but good stuff to know.

As far as pricing goes, run a search using the search feature at the top of the Pricescope page to get some comparative numbers.

All things being equal with the cuts/ratios, I''d tend towards the F, VS2 myself. It''s smaller, but having a J, VVS2 mix doesn''t really seem to make sense to me. Like buying a Ferrari, then painting it beige...

Just a personal preference there, I''m sure other PS''ers will give more info.

A J in a step cut may show more tint than a round for example, also no need for VVS if you can find a well cut VS clarity. The F VS looks promising, I would ask the good folk at JA to go through your selections with you and advise you as to suitability, if it is eyeclean etc.

I wouldn't mind a beige Ferrari...

This is what happens to a Ferrari when you paint it beige!

This is the response to the same question from one of the sales persons at JA:
The "J" VVS2 is the better choice because it has no inclusions underneath the table, making it 100% eye clean. I will, however, get idealscopes for both diamonds.

HMmmm decisions decisions!

Ask if you can get an ASET images as they are considered to be more useful for fancy shapes.

I know the images are magnified but the inclusion listed as a crystal on the report in the F VS2 just pops out at me, it''s in the table which makes it easier to find. I would for sure have them see if that''s eye clean.

Personally I kinda like the warmth in the J but you can''t really tell from the pictures so if your girl is color sensitive you may need to dig deeper.

I like my ECs cold and icy so I stick to at least H and better. J will show some warmth. Ask JA for ASETs; it's much easier to evaluate them that way. I prefer the cut on EC2 but with better colour.

Oh, what about the crown height on both stones?

At first glance, I like the .8 better, but this may be irresponsible of me to say.

Why is that?

I''m not very good at ECs.

Overkill on clarity with VVS. Also, without a real picture of the actual stone and the crown height information, there''s now way to tell if one is better than the other.

Maybe these? ERD Link 1 or ERD Link #2
Again you need photographs and an ASET image, the numbers don''t tell you much about EC''s, so ask Mark if he can get those for you.

I personally probably could not bring myself to purchase an EC (in typical E-ring size) with anything less than G/VS1 (although I might make some color allowance in 3+ct size)and even that would probably make me nervous unless it was simply a spectacular performer. Granted, I''m not the typical PSer. I have never liked RBs (and Princess even less). But I''d agree that IF would be a bit more than is required.

Anyhow, my main point was that one of the stones he was considering was in this size range and it appears that he could possibly get a better stone for less money. If he''s going to pay e.g., $2700, why not get an F/VVS instead of a G/VS, unless he knows the latter is a better performer.
