I bought this set of 4 oil dispensers but have only 3 cooking oils , Olive, Grape Seed, and Canola.

Considering what I already have, which oil should I add, and why?
I care about heart-healthiness, smoking temp.

Avocado!!!! High smoking temp, extremely versatile.

Thank you, but I strongly dislike the taste of avocado.
I never eat it or even guacamole.
Does its oil taste like avocado?

Is there another oil you like?

What about a favoured olive oil
i once got given a set of rosemary, chillie and um ...something elce (lemon maybe)
would be easy to make yourself
I remember the rosemary being particularly yummy

I use peanut oil for its neutral flavor and high smoke point.

Thanks all.
I really appreciate all the input.

BTW, I often consult America's Test Kitchen.
The had this comparison of the pros and cons of several oils.

Many of my friends & I feel that the kitchen floor becomes oilier after cooking with soybean oil.

+ 1 to peanut/groundnut/arachis oil.

I only stopped using it at home when I started doing pop up kitchen events due to potential issues with nut allergies.

What about sesame oil? It's great in Asian dishes. =)2

It has low smoking point, and is mainly use as a flavouring oil towards the end of the cooking process, e.g. to drizzle over stir-fried dishes.

I do that a lot as in drizzle over stir-fried dishes towards the end with toasted sesame oil in conjunction with a sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and chopped spring onions.

Exceptions about, for example, it is used in marinades for Korean cuisine.

I use avocado oil. It stands up to high heat and it heart healthy and delicious. Costco carries a wonderful avocado oil and spray too. LOVE it.

It doesn't taste like avocado to me. I cannot say what you will think but give it a try. You won't know til you taste it.

Fun labels, enjoying your creativity!

I just discovered avocado oil myself. I like it for the same reasons others have stated - high heat cooking, low smoke point, healthy. I don't find that it has or gives the flavor of avocados, but then I do like avocados/guac so I may not be sensitive to any flavoring.

I use coconut oil sometimes, as I have read that it is one of the healthier options. Refined has no flavor, unrefined has a hint of coconut flavor. However, I use it in solid form which doesn't help you since you can't pour it from your container. I haven't tried fractionated coconut oil for cooking (though I use it in my homemade toothpaste) - maybe that's worth a look?

+ 1 for Avocado (also getting it from Costco, also don't think it tastes like avocado)

yep, avocado oil for me too.

I bought avocado oil some 5 years ago but found it gave me heartburn!

+100 for avocado oil. I find it to be flavourless (YMMV!) and with a great high smoking temp (perfect for making popcorn with on the stovetop).

It's probably not "heart healthy" but I'll also put in a good word for ghee. Love the stuff. Life-changing, actually. Sear your steaks with it and you are in for a treat!

Coconut oil is also popular but I find that it has a much stronger taste than avocado, olive, etc. Hence, we don't use it much at home.

I agree on the coconut oil
It was the next big thing here for a while
It came from a Pacific island
i only used it in things that benefited from the coconut flavour as i found it really strong

I wouid hope avo oil is a bitter less bad for us as avos are ment to be good arn't they?

Anyone tried walnut oil ?
Ive seen it but its a bit pricy if its not going to be nice

right now the cannola oil im using has a taste im not enjoying - its not old but its been very hot over the summer

Coco oil - same here. Usually for desserts... I also don't appreciate that it can go rancid fairly quickly is stored incorrectly!

You now, on second thought, it may have been walnut oil that gave me heartburn. It had a strong flavor, so it probably it wasn't avocado oil after all.
I must try avocado oil again.

HI:

Oil for cooking? What's that?

cheers--Sharon

Butter
Americans seem to love butter
Won't fit in your fancy bottles though

Today is the first time in 40 years NZ is not selling butter to Russia

You know what makes butter more yellow ?
the farmer feeding the cows grass

AFAIK, coconut oil is usually solid at room temperature, therefore, it will be difficult to scoop into a narrow neck bottle for pouring.

I love butter, never margarine or other spreads.

I used to buy Anchor, now Lurpak when the shop I was in did not have Anchor in stock.

Consumer Reports (a paid-subscription service) has this free article comparing avocado, EVOO, safflower, coconut, and ghee.

I read lotsa hoopla about the current fad, coconut oil.
But, at 82% saturated fat, it must be very bad for your heart.
Here's the percentage of saturated fat in the six oils of the article:

Coconut 82%
Ghee 65%
EVOO 14%
Avocado 12%
Safflower 8%
Canola 7%

SNIP: "Despite" what you may have heard, coconut oil isn't a healthy choice.
It has more total saturated fat than beef or butter.
:eek2:

Here's their write up on coconut oil:

I LOVE coconut, but find coconut oil and milk being thrown into everything these days. Some of it is just nasty! I do try to watch the oil though because it's not the healthiest. BTW, coconut oil is great for my eczema, although I always want to lick it off. :lol-2:

There have been some really crazy diets going around here for a number of years regarding coconut oil
i mean its good its helping promote a product that helps developing nations (if one buys carefully) but it can't be good for the old ticker long term

It took us ages to use our jar of oil, i never replaced it

I would only consider using coconut oil as a substitute for animal fat such as lard or butter in vegan dishes.

@kenny I like your pot.. I also have three others in light blue.. :kiss2: They are the best!548B4BB9-8F44-4E31-9BC8-A7E582EF9197.png
