Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble deciding which setting I should choose for a ~2ct round brilliant diamond (I or J color) that I'll be purchasing from James Allen. I was originally going to choose a plain band but my bf likes the look of diamonds on the shank.

My two options:
1. Platinum 2.2mm Pave Diamond Engagement Ring (http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/ring/item_412-1921.asp) - this looks sturdier to me with cleaner lines.
2. Platinum Pave Set Four Prong Diamond Engagement Ring (http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/platinum-pave-set-4-prong-diamond-engagement-ring.html) - I would be changing this to a 6 prong head. This setting looks more delicate to me. JA has confirmed they can make this for a larger diamond for a $100 fee.

I have relatively small hands and a size 4 finger. I prefer thinner bands like Option 2 but it looks like Option 2 also requires more maintenance and care.

What do you all think? Does anyone have either setting and can share more pictures?

Thanks so much for your opinion!

I like the second one with the four prong changed to the six...I also think that a bigger stone like that would be protected better with the six prong head.

Thanks! I like 2nd one better too - seems like it would be more delicate in real life. I did see pictures, but James Allen posted pictures never look too flattering, no matter the setting. I like real-life hand pictures the best! :twirl:

Does the 2nd one seem like the pave diamonds would be knocked out more easily though?

A coworker of mine chose the second for his e-ring, it's really lovely and very delicate in person, the JA computer-generated images do it no justice. Nice choices!

I much prefer the second one. But I also think if you prefer a ring without diamonds on the band, you should get that! I actually prefer the plain e-ring band so I can wear a diamond wedding band and have them look like two separate rings.

Another option 2 vote! I find it more of a classic, timeless look and seems more proportionate for a delicate size 4 finger! It looks well made (although its a computer generated video) but the pics of recently sold, they look very well done.

#2 for my choice!

I bought the first 2.2 mm setting from JA, and I absolutely love it. It definitely is sturdy and has clean lines. The 'recently bought pictures on the JA site certainly are atrocious and do not do it justice. Here is my 'glamour shot' as reference. It does not look very glamorous.

The setting is delicate and thin, but certainly not as delicate as your second option as it is almost 0.5 mm thicker.

I would liken style #1 as halfway between pave and channel. If you like delicate pave, then definitely go with #2.

Here is my SMTB thread, if you would like to see style #1 it on a finger. My photos are not good, as they are ginormous iphone pics, but for reference, I have size 5.5 fingers.

erin_teal, Thanks so much for your post! I also think that the JA recently purchased pictures are the opposite of glamour shots. I love the pictures you posted in your SMTB thread. The milgrain is such a good idea! I will have to show this to my bf.

Will you be getting a matching wedding band? Will a normal straight wedding band sit flush with your ring?

Also, does this setting sit higher than other settings? I noticed your comment about it getting caught in things.

I honestly don't know anything about wedding bands and whether or not one would sit flush with my setting. I planned on asking the PS community for help when the time came for me to think about that. I do know that JA sells a matching band as well as one with a little concave centre - I don't know how to describe it - to fit the diamond.

As for the setting being high - I am pretty much used to it now. It is a cathedral setting, and I knew that going in, but I have never worn a ring in my life, so the entire thing felt foreign on my hands. I'm over that feeling now! I will tell you that it is set a little higher than what the JA computer images show. This might be something to consider if you're getting a 2 ct stone.

Congrats on your engagement! :)

Engagement hasn't happened yet! It won't happen until I get the ring. :)

Thanks for all your help on this! I think I'm leaning towards the Option 2 but I could also end up with a plain band. My budget is dependent on which stone I end up choosing.

I am sure you chose already, and they are both pretty. I love the first one.
