Assuming that they both had good makes, I'd go for the J/VS1. I don't mind a bit of colour, but I hate seeing carbon spots. However, if the H/I1 had inclusions that were white and really couldn't be noticed, I'd rather have that one.
I do have a ring with three I/I1 diamonds in it and I can't see the inclusions at all!
It's so hard to say unless you see the stones. Specs just don't tell you the whole story.
If I had to rate the C's: those would be clarity, carat, and then way further color and cut. Obviously, the J, VS1 is my choice and the other I might have some trouble accepting politely as a gift, if it wasn't so darn small. Normally, I would prefer a big champagne color VS to whatever D-F VS one could get for the same price, if this makes any sense to you.
I guess that given the size of the respective pieces, it would be hard to distinguish their quality, unless you are looking close to the ring (as opposed to how another person might get to see it from normal distance)...or already have good visual experience of a wide range of diamonds.
Thank you Richard Sherwood and everyone else. The rings both belong to my cousin and are both set in similar yellow gold mounts. They both look the same to me but when the indoor lighting is on the H seems to look whiter. They are both smaller stones so maybe that is why they look very similar. I don't know about cut angles but they look to be cut much the same, not ideal anyway. The inclusions in them both are white and in the I1 they can be seen when scrutinized close but not from arms length.
