Hi all,

Yes, I''m a total newb at this whole thing; however, this site has really guided me along. One thing I cannot find (and don''t know if there is a "right" answer) is which finger are you supposed to wear an anniversary band on? I''m in the market for an anniversary band for my wife and I don''t know what ring size to figure on: Does the new band go on the right hand ring finger? Does it make a difference that the wedding ring she already has was a two part set of engagement ring and wedding ring? Does the anniversary band replace the wedding ring (I don''t think she''ll go for that)?

Any suggestions welcomed, and oh, this is a total surprise so I can''t just ask her.

I''ll post another topic on selecting the ring and diamonds later.

hey trexmgd

welcome to ps!
there is no ''right'' way to wear an anniversary band. personally, i would wear the anniversary band on the right hand ring finger. that''s just what i think looks best. keep in mind if you choose a full eternity band, you have to get the sizing right on because the ring can''t be sized more than a bit of stretching can do.

In cases where the original wedding band is just plain, then an anniversary ring can be added as a third ring. But if she has a matched set that would not look good with an additional ring, then you need to look for a ring for her to wear on her right hand. Three stone rings are popular for that purpose. I would avoid the eternity ring style with diamonds all around because of the difficulty sizing them. My best advice would be to ask her to show you some styles she really likes. Most of us here don''t like total surprises like that! We''ve seen some sad situations with ladies receiving rings they didn''t like or wouldn''t have ever chosen themselves. There can still be an element of surprise if she shows you a few choices and you choose from those.

Thank you both so much for your responses. The style of ring she has talked about wanting in the past is a 3-diamond or past, present, future ring. I''ve been browsing some of the popular e-tailers and am seriously considering a 5 diamond ring (because we are now a family of 5). I think she''d really like it for the symbolism.

Anyway, do your right hand fingers measure about a half size larger than your left hand? I have a ring sizer from blue nile and have figured out her left hand ring finger size, but can''t think of a way to secretly get her right hand size.

It usually works out that your dominant hand is bigger than your other hand, but I know personally, my two ring fingers are about the same size. The left finger is a little smaller, but I can still wear my ering/wedding ring comfortably on my right hand. Then you have my husband who is right handed, and therefore logically should have a bigger right hand size, but in fact, his left hand is bigger than his right. Sorry, I know that doesn''t help.

That''s great that she has told you what she likes! We also are a family of 5, so I sort of like that idea, too. The only thing is, a lot of people wear those with a diamond solitaire. However, I think there are girls here that wear them as right hand rings as well. A 3 stone will probably cost more due to the need for a larger center stone.

I wear about a half to 3/4 larger on my right hand ring finger than my left. If you get a plain band (in the back), it shouldn''t be a big deal to resize.

You might want to look at the website Signed Pieces (Facets) because they have beautiful 5 stone rings, and some of the girls here have bought them and have been very pleased with the quality and prices.

My fingers are the same size on either hand. But does your wife’s finger size change at all? I can wear nearly a full size smaller when my hands are cold then when they are warm.
While sizing is now impossible I would say it is better to know for sure ahead of time, sometimes when stones are part of the shank it is harder to adjust them. Plus she is going to want to wear her gift, not ship it off for corrections!
I think you idea of a five stone band is very sweet. Quest Jewelers, Facets/Signed Pieces and Whiteflash all make lovely pieces in this genre. I personally have worked with Whiteflash and the way those ACA diamonds sparkle and flash. WOW! It is delicious.

Whiteflash Bands:
Whiteflash Shared Prong 5 Stone
Five Stone Bar Band
5 Stone ACA U prong eternity band with 10 ACA surprise diamonds
5-Stone Trellis Ring

I personally think the last two on that list are particularly nice for right hand rings and in general.

Thank you all for your responses, you've been so very helpful!

I have great news on the size quandry: My daughter was playing around with some pipe cleaners from her art set and started making bracelets, necklaces, and yes, rings. Now of course my daughter wanted my wife to try them all on! The light bulb went off in my head and I got in on the play. I started making perfectly round rings and crushing the "fuz" on the inside of the made up rings to get a close feel on the size. I know it's not the same as getting it professionally sized, but I think I nailed it.

Now for the ring - I love the ring that diamondseeker linked to (Dancing Fire's) because I finally could see a true shot of the what one would look like with that size diamonds.

Questions: 1) Is the open basket style or the "hole/see through" (like THIS @ signed peices) better because it lets light pass through? I can see some obvious cleaning issues here, but do they display the diamond better than say this one the Matatora linked me to.

2) That second link (and the bottom 1.25 option) refers to 5 ACA mele diamonds - how is that different from the A Cut Aboves that Dancing Fire got? What is ment by mele? The rings you guys linked me to seem to be a better value than the Signature 5 stone I was looking into at Blue nile, so I can only imagine what I could get from the same vendors at the higher price point.

3) Is it taboo around here to talk dollar$ and cents?

Well, count this as a bump... I was hoping to edit the thread title but that doesn''t seem to be an option.

Hi! Just wanted to add that I love Dancing Fire''s wife''s 5 stone ACA - I just got pretty much the same ring from WF - 1.25ctw with ACA stones (5 stone ring). I can tell you how much it cost for mine in platinum if it is okay to do so (I don''t really know the etiquette for that sort of thing around here?). I wish we could PM still. Anyways, I LOVE my ring and WF had great customer service and great prices compared to Blue Nile''s ideal stones and they also beat SP''s prices by quite a bit.

Can anyone else chime in with if it''s okay to be more specific about price for a ring like this? I know people post prices for diamonds themselves, but I don''t want to post anything inappropriate.

i looove the idea of a 5stone ring and what it would represent to your wife. that is very sweet. melee is anything under .30 (which is pretty good sized!)

the pipe cleaner ring was a grrreat idea!

you should be pretty darn close with that.

Why take a chance with the wrong size? You could cut out a picture of an anniversary band, present it in a box, with a note inviting her to go with you to get the real thing. Just an idea.

Laila - Drop me an e-mail: trexmgd AT aol DOT com, I''d really appreciate it and like to hear about your experience.

Belle - So mele refers to size only, not any sort of indication of a lesser quality? I guess it sounds so "random" to me, as if they wouldn''t be matched up.

Dancing Fire - Nope, I LOVE the look of the lower setting. Maybe there are several reasons not to do it, but it just looks better to me in those pics linked by Diamondseeker. I''d also welcome an e-mail from you detailing the experience.

Chol - I appreciate all responses, after all, I came here to ask for help. BUT, I can''t imagine one woman here wanting to open a box and find a piece of paper in it over opening that box and WHAM, there it is. Also, I don''t plan on going to any of the "maul" stores, as they are appropriately called around here (see, I''ve been doing my homework), so she''d just have to sit an wait while we ordered something. If I am off on the size, I''ll just take it somewhere locally and get it done on the spot, not the biggest problem to have.

Thanks all, and I welcome more responses. Especially the open/close/hole in the bottom setting question.

Hey, trexmgd, I believe that the hole on the bottom is for ease of cleaning, you can get a few bristles of a brush in there for cleaning the pavillion facets of the diamond. I think that your idea of the 5 stone band is great (in my opinion it is more anniversary-ish than a three stone) and with you choosing vendors that use premium/ ideal cuts, you should have one hell of a band to give her : ) I am sure that she will be delighted!

I wish you well,

Bridget

the term melee purely refers to the size. aca''s are exrtremely high quality..the best of the best.

i also like the look of the lower settings and anyone that wears rings will appreciate not having something sitting up so high as well.

your wife is going to be sooooo happy!

I''d like to thank eveyone here for being such a big help. I think I''m going to ask for a clone of Dancing Fire''s ring from White Flash. It looks a little different from the one offered on the site and I like the lower setting as well.
