Just how big of a difference is there between .70ct (close to 5.8mm)and .80ct(6.0mm). Both of the stones are H&A ideal cut. Once mounted (vatche setting - #927), will there be a noticable difference?
I have got to choose one by today.

Thanks for your input!

The best way to know that is to go to the mall to the chain stores and look at their diamonds with the cert cards. On the cards, they list the diameter of the diamonds. Pick one that's about 5.8 and one about 6.0 and look at them next to one another.

They'll likely be a slight difference, but you'll probably only see that difference when the stones are NEXT to one another. Keep in mind that your stone, once mounted, will be viewed alone, not side-by-side.

I'd also guess there's a big price break on the .70 because it's not over the 3/4 mark, so take that into consideration too.

That is not correct - 3/4 pricing starts at 0.70. You have to go 0.69 to get the half-carat price and save some money, also in my experience it's much easier finding nice stones in the high 60s than it is in the high 90s. For similar cut quality and price per carat ("all else being equal") I would much rather have 0.80.

Edit: side by side you will see a difference, probably not from across the room. There's a big enough difference that I wouldn't use 5.8 and 6.0mm stones in a set of earrings even though they're not side by side.

Actually, the price per carat for 0.80ct (Color H) is about $4650 and for 0.70ct (Color I) is about $4000.

Once set, thse would look as big, white, clean and brilliant. Who cares about the respctive tenth of a carat?

Assuming the same clarity and make, that sounds about right. For just the color, I to H costs you 10-12% at VS, and 0.8 often trades at a small premium to 0.7 just like 0.6 may trade at a small premium to 0.5.

There are a couple of reasons.

The cutter may have made some compromises to get 0.70 since it's at a weight category.

If you ever have to repolish a chip on the 0.7 you may drop below the weight category and have a stone that's worth significantly less. Of course this isn't a big deal at 0.7 as it would be at 2.0, 3.0, etc.

A nice 0.8x does in fact look larger and is often a little harder to find than 0.7x. In my mind at least that can make it just slightly more desirable, all other things being equal.

Yes I'm nitpicking

but I think they're valid reasons. Comparing diamonds is an exercise in nitpicking
