Ok, I have two rings, must sell one, but have been going back and forth...

They are both 90% plat 10% irid settings, both vintage and in very good condition. The first one is a little big on me and it shows. I can't decide whether to spend the money to size it down... I wonder if it will still look too top heavy for my short stubby fingers. It's a size 6 to 6 1/4, I wear a 5 3/4. The setting itself is very wide. The stones are probably early round brilliants, 5 at 25 points each. A U-prong setting with little mini prongs between the stones.

The second one feels a little small to me, but when I first got it I thought it was massive! So DSS is real, friends. This one is sized perfectly, has 5 early round brilliants at 20 points each in V-prongs.

So, opinions? I am thinking of resizing the bigger one today, if the jeweler thinks he can do it without loosening the stones any.

Appreciate any comments!
Edited to add: second ring is a couple posts down

I would keep the bigger ct weight.

Here's the smaller of the two rings:

But would you keep the bigger ct weight if it looks silly-big? My teenage sons jokingly call them my brass knuckles. The stone quality is comparable - probably all VS, well-cut stones.

Edited to add: does the larger ring look like it would sit correctly if sized down a tiny bit?

I like the way the smaller one looks on your hand. However, if you feel DSS and the bigger one satisfies your itch then maybe you should keep it instead. I think if the bigger one were resized it might look better but the V-shape on the ends sort of bugs me.

ETA: If you keep the bigger one, I think it would look better stacked with a knife-edge band.

The surface area of those larger five stones just isn't going to fit on that finger no matter what you do. Maybe line them up vertically? I much prefer the other ring on you. It just looks like it fits as is -- proportionally.

Thanks, yeah, I'm sorry to say I think I agree... I *want* the bigger ring, but don't see it fitting well even if sized. As it is, too big, it feels like a lot of metal between my fingers.

Is this what you mean by line them up vertically?

Vs on the end bug me too. But dh says no to resetting. The thing I don't get is that when I look at the 5 stone ring threads I see lots of fingers my size and smaller wearing larger sized stones and it doesn't look so disproportional.

Third option is to sell both and keep a lookout for one that's "just right"! Not sure what that is... 1ctw fits great but feels "small" to me. 1.25ctwish is too much stone for my fingers... Maybe if 25 pointers were set in a lower impact setting.

The larger one des look a wee bit strange. How did you wear it before? It kinda looks like a ring you could wear on your middle finger. The smaller one is perfect to pair with an ering or solitaire.

I like the ring w/out the Vs on the end better. It has a nice clean look to it! The Vs add clutter.

As much as I want to say go with the larger stones, I think the one with smaller stones is more flattering on your hand. If you compare the two rings, the stones in the larger one don't look that much bigger - I think the difference is more that the smaller one has less metal, sits lower on your finger and follows the curve of your finger.

The ring with smaller stones still looks very pretty and substantial on your hand!

I agree with this!

I like the smaller one thebest. Perfect proportions! So much so that i would love to see pics!

I echo marymm and junebug! The smaller is just visually more appealing to me for several reasons -- stone size, setting and the way it sits with your band is very complimentary.

The smaller one looks like it fits better. I'd keep that one

Smaller. I agree that it looks like it is perfect for your finger size :) The other one looks uncomfortable.

I agree that keeping the smaller one is the easy answer, but will you be happy with that over time? Is it possible to keep the bigger one (if that's what you decide you want) and have the "V"s modified/softened?

+1

DSS is horrible isn't it :nono:

I also like the smaller band because the Vs bug me on the larger one. And I just don't like the look of too much overhang with 5-stone bands at all.

And ouch, your pinky nail looks like it hurts!!

Those pesky 'v's! I would go for the bigger one if not for that. Any way that setting could just be altered eliminating them? I would check that out with a good jeweler before sending it back. I love the bigger stones. If not, then it would have to be the smaller for me. I have a 5 stone with 20 pointers and I wish it was just a tad bigger.

I haven't read all the replies, I didn't want to be influenced, so I went right to "reply"!! I prefer the second ring on your hand - it appears better balance and less bulky between the fingers. And I love the diamonds on that one!!!

ok - back to read the thread and see if I voted with the herd or went rogue! :D

Thanks SO MUCH for all the replies! It's really nice to get feedback from other diamond lovers... Dh doesn't really count as one but he tries!

Re: my pinky - I know, I'm so self-conscious about it. It's been like this for years and doesn't hurt a bit, but it does look awful, doesn't it? I wish I knew why. The nail just grew a ridge, then started splitting along that ridge, then the tiny edge that was separated just came off. Sorry for the grossness. If anyone knows any remedies or cover ups, I'm all ears.

Re: the bigger 5 stone - I doubt it can be modified because of the way the sides are cast... If anyone's interested I'll post a side view and you can see what I mean. It does poke into the side fingers in an uncomfortable way. Kind of the way a big eternity band tends to. If the sides could be inexpensively altered that's definitely something I'd consider! It does look big enough to fit a midde finger, but it's not. I actually do have an even bigger five stone than this one on sale with JbEG that fits my middle finger. Yes, I have an obsession with these rings! oh, the suggestions on pairing it with a knife edged band... I've never loved the way a knife edge cuts into the other fingers, which I suppose is my answer right there on keeping it as is. If it were originally made smaller, or my fingers were a size larger, it might be perfect, but I need to just accept that it's not.

The smaller one... After supper I'll post some more pics since someone wants to see... Just a classy little ring and the v shaped prongs are something I've never seen before. I'd love to wear it with an ering but unfortunately my (current) solitaire (see post in rockytalky if you are curious) doesn't play well with it at all. So I've been wearing it as a right hand ring sometimes, and as an alternative to my solitaire for a change. If I ever reset the solitaire I'd consider putting that stone in a setting I could wear on my right hand, and keep this on my left with the plain band. The love/hate thing I have about this ring is that there is no stone overhang, which feels lovely on the hand, but also makes the stones look smallish to me.

Thanks again for the input!

I like the larger one a lot because I think it is like my vintage ring except my stones slightly taper which makes the sides not stick out as much. But I think that ring size is just too big for you (as in the span of diamonds), so you may as well sell it and keep the one that fits your finger better!

Thanks diamond seeker - your 5 stone was the one that actually inspired my hunt for one! I adore yours!

Wow, that is great! You surely did do a good job! It is nice to find these vintage diamond platinum bands, isn't it?!

I like the smaller one.

Here are a couple iPhone photos of the bigger one so you can see the substantial sides...

Lastly, a couple profile shots. So you can see the unusual (to me, anyway) prongs. Sorry they're all fuzzy camera phone pics but I just don't have the mental capacity tonight to do any "real" photography! And if you're still here, thanks!

Pretty! Glad you kept the small one. The side profile reminds me of the logo for BGD!
