Where would you buy if you were buying a 5-stone ring?

I decided a few months ago that I wanted to wear one ring instead of 2 on my wedding ring finger. I had a beautiful solitaire and a gorgeous eternity band, and had found myself wearing the eternity band alone most of the time. So I decided I want to get a five stone ring to wear instead of the 2 rings.

I've tried on various sizes in B&M stores, and really liked the look of them. My ring size is 5, so I tried on 1.5 ctw and 2 ctw. So that puts the stone size at 30 - 40 pts each.

If you were buying one of these rings, where would you buy it? BGD, Whiteflash, IDJ, somewhere else? I like the u-prong style I think. That's what my eternity band was.

Just looking for suggestions, especially from those of you who have them!
Thx!

I have an e-band from IDJ, and I really think they have the best combo of good quality diamonds and best prices. I would probably go with them :))

Ditto. Their prices really can't be beat and you get a fabulous product.

Thanks! I have bought from IDJ, BGD and WF and love all of them. I need to decide on stone size (can't decide between the 1.5 and 2 ctw). I couldn't tell much difference between the 2 sizes - they both give great finger coverage on my finger. Once I know the size stones I want, maybe I'll get prices from all 3 vendors. I think I'm leaning towards the 30ish point stones.

If anyone has advice, please send it along!

I have a U-prong 5 stone band from Whiteflash. I love it! My stones are .33 each (1.65cttw) so similar to what you are considering. Also, I am a size 5 as well. For me personally, I would not want diamonds any larger (or smaller) than that because they diamonds cover the whole width of the finger so I can only see diamonds, no part of the actual band, and it doesn't dig into my other fingers. Plus, it's pretty darn blingy!

I have a picture of it in my avatar, as well as threads about my ring if you want to search and see pictures.

orbaya, thank you! Your ring has been a big inspiration for me! I love it. I think you're right about the stone size on a size 5 finger. I'll go try that one on again and then I just have to decide vendor! I don't really want the side stones like the BGD nightingale, although it is a beautiful ring. I think I just want the plain sides. Have you found the u-prong setting easy to keep clean? And did you go with plat or white gold?

thanks again!

Katiedid - thank you so much for the compliment!!

I find that the U-prong is definitely easy to keep clean! Because it is such an open design, you don't have to worry about cleaning between prongs. I put it in my ultrasonic machine for a few minutes while I do my morning routine, then use a soft brush and voila! Perfect! I also steam clean my jewelry a few times a week.

My ring is platinum and I enjoy the "heaviness" of it and the fact that I don't have to worry about rhodium plating. Some people prefer white gold over platinum because of the patina platinum develops over time. Personally, I'm fine with that.

I like the heaviness of platinum too. I also have a body chemistry that turns white gold back to yellowish more quickly than I'd like. So I'll probably go for platinum. Is this the skye band?

Yes, this is the Skye band. I bought my ring in 2008, before it was a stock setting for Whiteflash so it was custom made for me at the time. I took inspiration from another Pricescoper (who I have not seen around here in a while....if she is here, I haven't come across any of her posts). She designed the U-prong concept and then I made a few changes which is ultimately what ended up on WF's site. I did not name the style, the other poster did because ultimately it was her design.

I just love it!!

And I know you will too!!

I'm having a custom made, hand forged piece by VC currently. It's a graduated 5 stone ring in platinum that's a little over 2 cts. I will post pics when I receive it soon!

I would go to Brian Gavin. This is my favourite 5 stone ring ever.

That is beautiful with the rose gold! I make it with the Sally, though.

Thanks again orbaya! I really like the Skye. I'm getting a quote on it, and also emailed IDJ on something similar. Haven't emailed Lesley yet to get one from BGD. I love their version, but don't want the little side stones. Maisie, thanks for posting that one - it is truly beautiful!

Mom2boys, I can't wait to see your ring!

I just realized BGD has a 5 stone, u-prong without the side melee. I'll need to get a quote on that one too.

So I'm still waiting on a quote from one more vendor (hopefully will get it next week), but in the meantime as I continue to look at 5-stone rings, I see that there seems to be an almost equal mix of u-prong and trellis settings now. I've had both types of settings in rings before and I guess it's just a matter of taste. I like both and wondered what others' thoughts are on the similar types. I have pretty much eliminated the standard shared-prong type of setting where the stones are mounted nice and low but you can't see much other than the tops of them. I am still leaning towards the u-prong as I know how easy they are to keep clean and I love that profile. But the trellis is a close second contender right now. If it matters, ring size is 5, metal will be platinum, and most likely the stones will be in the .30ish ct range for a total of 1.5 TCW.

Thoughts?

thanks shimmer! Great comparison shots!

For me, it would be the choice of the classic Tiffany open basket setting (custom), the VC u-prong ring made for mom2boys, or the BG Sally.

BUT...I am in LOVE  with the AVR 5-stone band...so I'd possibly use some Vatche setting if I could buy AVR's!

yeah diamondseeker, that ring with the AVRs is amazing!

Gosh those AVRs are beautiful. They cost a little more though. :(
